Quinn is certainly not an adequate replacement. The supporting cast in general has been pretty dull since the end of season 2.

Yeah, that's what I don't get. If the writers thought the Doakes storyline was played out, why did they decide to introduce a character with many of his same qualities? Quinn is basically a less funny and more unlikable version of Doakes. Hell, season 3 would have been watchable if Doakes was still there.

Doakes was Dexter's only worthy adversary at Miami Metro and the tension because of it was great. The rest are morons for the vast majority of the time.

People complain about Debra, but she may as well be Buffy the Vampire Slayer compared to that piddling shithead LaGuerta.
Her and Angel's romance in seasons 4 and 5
is more contrived than Slumdog Millionaire.

I hated Doakes. He was a horrible actor and had some horrible scenes. They had Doakes' character more compelling there at the end than they have made Quinn's, but at least Quinn is a mediocre actor. If it wasn't for Michael C. Hall being so awesome, I would have given up on Dexter in season 1 because of how awful Doakes, La Guerta, and others were.

I don't think King is a particularly bad actor - most of the dialog written for him was just hard not to hamfist. The writing for Dexter is just not all that great most of the time, especially in the periphery. The action sequences are always well-done, but it even takes a tremendous presence like Michael C. Hall to deliver some of the silly monologues.

God, he was a terrible actor.
Dexter, by far, is the only show I've seen succeed this well with one great actor (consistent characters only).
Doakes - turrible
Deb - even worse
Miguel - comical, but bad
Michael C. Hall is the only person on that show with any acting chops whatsoever.

Quinn pisses me off because his plot was too damn similar to Doakes.
