I knew it would be dumb but thought it would be wink-wink dumb. Honestly, the writing was pretty good, but I don't know if they timing was off or the direction and editing were terrible - maybe both. Lines and characters that should have been funny were delivered in unfunny ways, usually just a character speaking at the camera while standing still.

There were still probably a dozen moments that cracked me up, just on the pure comedic talent of Will Forte.

It's a mindless, silly comedy that made you "crack up" a dozen times and you're disappointed? I mean what were you wanting, 20-30 crack ups? A deep insight on humanity?

Tried to show my friend the movie the other day and he couldn’t get into it.

Think it’s something you have to just discover yourself for whatever reason and dive head first into the absurdity

Nobody’s ever broken the 30 crackup barrier. That’s like a 4 minute mile.

I agree with you totally. I’ve watched it twice. Outside of a few lol moments it’s really really dumb and just stupid.

It takes a couple of viewings but it gets better the more times you watch it. First time through I hated it also. Second time was a little better. By the third time I realized it was timeless. It is very much the same as Napoleon Dynamite was for me also. Sometimes greatness takes longer to realize.

My hope for any comedy is just that it will be rewatchable. There was very little about this that would make me want to watch it again. Shock humor just doesn't hold up; so legitimately funny scenes like the back-to-back sex scenes that landed so well on first viewing just aren't going to be there. And I really don't feel like sitting through 15-20 minutes of blah just to get to the great "Why did counth kill your wife anyway?" monologue.

And like I said, the writing was pretty good, but jokes that should have been funny weren't landing. Kristin Wiig was in the 75% of the movie, but the only two funny things she did were (1) sit deadpan when blood explodes on her during the wedding flashback and (2) cry in the middle of the coffee shop. She's a talented performer, the writing was pretty good, how could they not get more laughs out of her in disguise or during the sex scene?

I was disappointed too the first time I watched it, but it really grew on me on repeat viewings.

Kung Pow and Monty Python's Holy Grail share a hearty chortle at this

I've never understood this approach. If a movie takes multiple viewings for you to actually enjoy it, then it is generally not a quality movie. This mainly goes for comedies, but it can apply to other genres as well. But a movie should be able to stand on its own as entertainment IMO, so if it fails the first time, it doesn't deserve a second.

And this is a movie that I avoided for a very long time because I just knew I would hate it. I am usually spot on when judging what I will like and dislike. I was never a huge fan of MacGruber on SNL outside of maybe the first time I saw it. And I usually kinda hate Will Forte.

However, I finally watched this several years ago and absolutely loved every minute of it. It is hilarious from pretty much start to finish, and is VERY quotable. And it made me mad at myself for never giving it a chance sooner.

Fantastic movie/comedy.

It also works the other way too. I have liked a movie the first time I saw it and hated it more and more after every subsequent viewing (Last Jedi comes to mind)

Not sure why this works like this for some people

The best comparison I can make is Transformers. Stick with me for a second.

Transformers, no matter how many giant fighting robots we saw, could not overcome a shitty movie everywhere else.

In MacGruber, despite a legit 20 or so humorous moments (celery butt, Ghost sex) or themes (car stereo, soft rock music) it just wasn’t enough to overcome an overall bad movie.

Blasphemy! Classic film that only gets better with each viewing.
