Wow. For the early 80s and only 5 minutes of screen time that is a shocking number. He did have the studio Over barrel since they original ending didn't even include them going to wally world and they had to scramble to add a new ending... But that is a big number for that time period.

You got more info on that?

The ending was they find out the park is closed so they go to Roy wallys house and force him to entertain them.... Like make. Him dance and sing... End.
They tested it and it Bombed. So they got Hughs to write a new ending in the park, casted John Candy and filmed it in 4 days

Wow. The funny thing about the Vacation movies is that I never even thing about the endings. The quotable lines is what makes those movies for everyone.

Just to go into a bit more detail
Original ending explanation
Test audiences didn't like that they didn't get to see the park after all that build up so they reshot the ending.
Original ending explanation
quote:
As in the final version Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his family finally arrive at the Walley World amusement park, only to find it closed for repairs.
However, in the original ending, after purchasing the BB gun, Clark also buys a map of the stars homes and tracks down Roy Walley himself at his house where he is having a meeting in his backyard. Clark gets revenge on Walley and his employees by holding them at gunpoint and forcing them to entertain him and his family by singing and dancing for them. The police show up to arrest Clark and are about to take him to jail when suddenly, the mysterious beautiful woman in the red sports car played by Christie Brinkley shows up and reveals herself to be Roy Walley's daughter! After some coaxing, she convinces her father to drop the charges.
The final scene was to show the Griswolds on a plane heading back home (wearing complementary Walley World hats) only to find out that they're on the wrong flight! Clark then hijacks the plane and attempts to get the pilots to change course.

Wow!!! Do you think it still exists somewhere? That should be on an anniversary DVD or something.

that actually seems to fit together nicely and wouldn't be too bad

this just seems unncessarily over the top

Yeah holy shite what a terrible idea. Would have totally changed the tone of the movie. Not to mention killed any sequels as Clark would have been in jail for the rest of his life

Totally worth it for this line alone:
"Moose at front shoulda told ya"

At least he invested it into his community by buying into a pro football franchise.

You Forgot:

So they kind of shelved that idea and used a similar idea for Christmas vacation. FWIW, it worked really well in Christmas Vacation

He was Vacation's Marlon Brando.

That's why Anthony Michael Hall, who was a little kid for most of principal photography:

had about a foot growth spurt during the break and is almost as tall as Chevy (who is a big man for an actor) at Walley World.

Okay, so I'm exaggerating, but only slightly so.

John Candy was worth every penny spent in his limited career.
The hands down most beloved deceased actor.

Country has gone downhill since he died. I’ve always thought he was destined to take on a serious role and win an Oscar.
