Good casting in my opinion, considering it is an adaptation of Homer's "Odyessy."
I have a friend that completely missed that this was a retelling of the Odyssey.

Tha frick? He should have been nominated for an Oscar as Charlie in Barton Fink. Arguably the best performance in any Coen film, possibly excepting Bardem's Chigurh.

(ETA: Lerner was actually nominated for Barton Fink, but he was the definition of your complaint - he was literally playing dress up in the film. Fantastic performance, too, but that kind of role is easier than Charlie was, IMHO.)

Yeah, casting Matt Dillon as a character representing a mythical giant would have been godawful.

It would need to be someone physically imposing to represent a cyclops - Goodman was spot on - Adam Baldwin might have been a good choice, as would Clancy Brown.

Those guys don't exactly fit the image of a mythological cyclops, whereas Goodman does. Good casting in my opinion, considering it is an adaptation of Homer's "Odyessy."

Yeah, you're right. I totally overlooked that aspect of the role. I'll stick to my day job. I don't know who I would rather see, but John Goodman just never gets me to buy into his "characters".

The Coens write amazing parts specifically for Goodman. It's not a matter of him being cast. He's cast before they write the script.

They do that for most of their regulars, Turturro and Polito (RIP) especially.

I may be in the minority on this, but I don't think John Goodman was the best choice for this role. In every Coen Brothers role I've seen him in, I only see John Goodman playing dress-up. His presence on screen detracts from my movie going experience.

Possible substitutes? Maybe Michael Madsen or Matt Dillon.
