underrated performance IMO

shite movie sure, but i actually enjoyed JV as FDR. The mannerisms, the voice, the resolve.

who's idea was it to film a war movie but focus on a love story. Movie would have been great without the chase of the girl and the faux death and the re connection and the real death and the old hubby taking care of new death hubbies kid.

It worked for Titanic, which was made just a few years before Pearl Harbor.

It makes sense that someone would try to replicate it.

Should have just made Beckinsale a hot stripper and focused on the war.

It wound up teaching us the difference between James Cameron and Michael Bay, and I'm not even a big Titanic fan.

it was more of a rhetorical question. it is a known process hollywood does with putting love stories in man movies so it might bring the women audience to watch it.

From Here to Eternity is much better because of the actors, and my dad being in it. He was stationed at Scofield Barracks, and is one of the guys drilling in the opening of it.

Opening of From Here to Eternity (on YouTube)<-----Fast forward through the first 50 seconds of this guys post.

A very well acted scene. Other than FDR being President at the time and having polio it has no basis in reality, but a very well acted scene.

FDR was the consummate wheeler and dealer. You didn't get big dramatic moments from him behind closed doors, you got a constant barrage of jokes and FDR slowly but surely winning you over to his point of view.

The only person who was immune to FDR's charm offensive was General Marshall, who made it a point to never laugh at the President's jokes and always presented the military picture as bluntly as possible. It is why Marshall did not get over all command of the European Theater of Operations, FDR knew he was the one person in government he could count on to run the military for the entire war. That and Marshall was as loyal as a stone. Roosevelt could rest easy in the knowledge that Marshall would never go behind his back to Congress.

It would not play well on the screen but FDR in the immediate aftermath wasn't giving volcanic speeches to his advisors and venting his anger. He was deadly calm and efficient. He didn't panic and he stated privately that he knew the US was going to suffer a string of defeats before our military was built up enough to turn the tide.
