Justified -- I'm 4 episodes into season 1 and I've got a question

So far it seems like one of those Law and Order/House/NCIS/JAG shows that have a new story each week with only limited story lines continuing throughout.
Is each episode just a new story of him threatening to kill someone if they don't leave town in 24 hours... they don't leave... he out-draws them... he is on paid leave until the next episode?
I like it so far but am not interested in starting a series like the ones I listed above.

It's a good blend of episodic and season long story arc. I'd say it's about a 40/60 mix.

i started in season 2, which was more of an overall season arc
when i went and watched season 1, i was disappoint

Stick with it. It gets better. May not be one of those shows you can watch 5 in a row of at first, but by the end of Season 1 and into Seasons 2 and 3, you will be excited to watch every new episode. The 4th season has been somewhat lackluster at this point, but I'm thinking it will pick up.

that's too bad, Season 1 established the universe and Raylan as a badass. The ending episodes of Season 1 is still my favorite part of the show.
To the OP, it establishes the heightened reality and the outlaw nature of the area and really has a rewarding end to the season.

well it's not fair, b/c season 2 of justified is one of the best seasons of any tv show ever
but the episodic nature was kind of boring.

I think the early pitfalls of Season 1 are overblown, but part of the reason is that Walton Goggins was added late to the cast (he was supposed to die in the pilot) and therefore unavailable for some of the early stuff. However, it did allow other characters like Arlo to become established as threats to Raylan.
but yes, season 2 was superior. I think that season 1 is a must watch before season 2, if nothing more than to understand the Ava-Raylan and Raylan-Arlo relationships.

So does he have a justified killing each week?

Margo Martindale, who played Mags Bennett won an Emmy for her role and I wish they could bring her back.

No, it gets better and killings stop. When Walton Goggins and Mags Bennett are added in,it gets good. Raylon going after the moonshiners, seeing Ava, and the black guy in the hills that sells BBQ and drugs, all make great seasons 2 and 3. Season 4 is starting slow, all FBI and Marshall stuff and his new girlfriend turns on him and steals all of his money,$30,000.00 and Raylon has to start over. I love the show and look forward to it and recording it to watch again.
