Last House on the Left (the 2009 remake) showed on AMC last night. I was unaware that this is a remake of a Wes Craven film, he is credited as a Producer, and the original is pretty famous in the horror genre.

Has anyone seen this thing? I am not a prude but I was damn shocked this showed on regular cable TV.

I thought it was a little odd early in the movie when they have the teen aged daughter stripping to her underwear with close up shots of her chest and shots of her butt. They really sexualize her early on but I thought that was it. Wrong.

They proceed to a gang rape sequence, multiple killings (including a close up stabbing in the gut) and some other stuff that was really graphic. Frankly, I wasn't prepared for all that.

Is the original like this? How was this movie received when it came out for those who remember it?

The trailer invented the trope, "To avoid fainting, keep repeating: "It's only a movie, only a movie, only a movie."

Believe it or not the original is actually more violent and fricked up. It nearly ended Wes Craven's career.

Damn. Was it rated R? Because I know the MPA used to like to Drop an X on stuff like this.

It had to but cut several times to get an R rating and even then projectionists were so disgusted they would edit it themselves when it got to their theaters so it's now impossible to even get the uncut R version.

It's the only horror movie I can think of where the murderers are not the villains. The remake adds the character of the lead bad guy's younger brother who ends up helping the parents.

That’s that male gaze Laura Mulvey was talking about

Wasn't it based on a true story?

I have seen the re-make but not the original and I agree with everything you said.

I have a big issue when they sexualize someone portraying to be teen/tween even if the actress in the role is of age. But this goes beyond just sexualization so it is even worse.
