Legend (1985) - Which soundtrack is better? Tangerine Dream or Goldsmith?

Goldsmith's soundtrack was the original soundtrack -sweeping orchestral music weaving in and out of the action.

However, Sidney Sheinberg, president of MCA (the parent company of Universal at the time), felt that the Goldsmith score would not appeal to the youth and pressed Ridley Scott for a new score. German group Tangerine Dream was contracted to complete a new, more contemporary score—-a job they completed in three weeks. Until 2002, only European audiences could see Legend with Goldsmith's score.

Personally, I much prefer Tangerine Dream's soundtrack because that was the version that I loved watching in the '80s. The electronic music makes the movie feel like an '80s fantasy movie which is what it is and what I want it to be. The Goldsmith version dulls it down and takes itself too seriously. Completely changes the tone of the movie.

I own both versions of the movie. It's amazing how different musical scores change the movie.

Tangerine Dream's version puts Legend in league with other great '80s fantasy movies like Labyrinth, Dragonslayer, Krull, The Dark Crystal, Willow, Conan, Princess Bride, Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and Beastmaster.

To demonstrate the difference between Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream's score, see below:

As much as I like Goldsmith (like I said in the last soundtrack thread Total Recall is underrated. It's The Thing of film scores), it's Tangerine Dream in this case. It makes the film far more ethereal which worked tremendously in its favor.

Tangerine Dream
Why do many people not know about this movie?
It was my favorite growing up and remains 1 of my all time favorites.

I remembered seeing it as a kid, but not knowing the name

and when I was like 14 or 15, I always wondered if this movie really existed or if I dreamed it.

I think I searched online for , "red demon horns movie" or something and found out that it was an actual movie.

Heck, I walked out of the theater and hit Sound Warehouse to buy the soundtrack.

All about the TDream.

Thief is another excellent score by them.

A lot of people don't realize that Ridley Scott directed Legend. Ridley fricking Scott...the director of Alien and Blade Runner. It's a beautifully filmed movie. Quintessential fantasy. Fantasy doesn't get any better than Legend, imo.

It's unfortunate that Tom Cruise refuses to acknowledge he acted in that movie, as if he's too good to admit he played the lead role in a mid-1980s fantasy flick directed by a legendary Hollywood director.

What a douchebag.

I'm pretty sure it was Mia Sara's first movie. Everyone knows her from Ferris Bueller, but I remember seeing that movie and thinking, that's the babe from Legend

I'm guessing I'll like the tangerine dream version better based on the exact reasons you state, ie the 80s nostalgia.
