Let's talk about Troy (2004)

This is such an underrated gem from the latest era of sword and sandal flicks brought about by the critical and commercial success of Gladiator. Brad Pitt and Eric Bana are both exceptional in their roles as Achilles and Hector. We were also gifted by a pretty stellar supporting cast with the likes of Peter O'Toole, Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Brendan Gleeson, and of course the beautiful forms of both Rose Byrne and - the hottest Helen of Troy of all - Diane Kruger. Orlando Bloom was also in it but let's not talk about him. And I think we can all agree that the fight between Hector and Achilles was one of the best movie fights of the last 20-30 years.

There were a couple of scenes where Kruger was just SMOKING hot and believable as “the face that launched a thousand ships.”

The Director’s Cut is great. My only critique is allowing Orlando’s Paris to live. But they basically had to change the whole story to avoid killing Brad before the climax of the movie.

I don’t think this movie is underrated. Most people recognize it as a very good movie. Not great, but very good

Agreed but I think I remember hearing that this was a studio decision. WB didn't want all three of the film's major stars killed off and Helen going back to Menelaus at the end like she does in Homer's original story. They wanted a happier conclusion to the Helen/Paris romance.

Paris’ character was a little bitch though. I would have been ecstatic if that little butt goblin was killed

It sucked.
If instead of telling us repeatedly how this war would be epic and remembered forever they had actually made it so in the movie.
Homer gave them a great plot and they just had to change it. Paris had to die but nooooo

I was always a big fan of Hectors wife.

one of my favorite ending quotes to a movie ever

Don't know why people panned it at the time. I mean its not Alexander.
Highly entertaining.

That was a great fight.
Hector was a damn honorable man to willingly fight Achilles, but if he had let the archers kill or run him off when he rode his chariot to the gate the Trojans probably would have won.
The Trojans would have used their knowledge of the land to frick with the Greeks and had the advantage in all big battles when backed up by those archers.

Btw, Michael Wood's 6-part BBC documentary "In Search of the Trojan War" is awesome.

Some of those scenes by Pitt are awesome, he really looks like a predator in his eyes. Great movie. A few cumbersome moments but still great.

Weirdly, I always thought Pitt was pretty terrible in this movie. But I still liked him in it. He just overacts and overdoes the brooding warrior routine IMO.
But I’ve always loved this movie though. Great set pieces and solid fight scenes. And just a good story overall. Even though the horse scene felt a little silly, it worked.
I usually watch it when I catch it on TV.
