LOST: if Ethan Rom was The Others' surgeon, where did he go to med school?

and where'd he do his 5-year surgery residency?

He was born on the island, so I assume they had to send him back to the real world for 9+ years for med school + residency (I'll assume he did an his undergrad online or something).
