Machine guns on Rovers in Armageddon

I know every movie, especially action movies, have some stupid illogical missteps and a lot of physics oversights but this is so dumb. And why would you need to have a remote control thing that Steve Buscemi's character Rockhound shoots on the asteroid? Even for the original mission designation it made no sense. Idk how, throughout the whole process of production, no one they consulted (which they always do for these type of movies) with said "umm... Why TF would you plan to need a machine gun?"
Where does this rank on action movie WTFs in this context?
Anyone else wondered this before?

I wondered about that the first time I saw it. Were they planning on meeting hostile aliens? Were they gonna shoot the rocks? It doesn't make any sense.

*After they made a big deal about Bruce Willis taking everything out of the rover they didn't need too. He was only focused on what was functional for drilling.
..... And a machine gun with enough ammunition just in case

Ben Affleck said it best
"Why is it easier to teach Oil Drillers to be astronauts than it is to teach Astronauts to be oil drillers"

Looked it up and apparently was in a deleted scene that was on the extended cut. It was for clearing debris. That scene should have been in there because it didn't make a lot of sense in the movie without the explanation.

It's a Michael Bay movie, that's why.

Still..A rocket launcher or Dynamite would've made more sense to clear debris than a bulky machine gun that had a barrel design that looked very much like the machine gun in The Last Samurai, just saying
This is DEF true as well

I thought it was a Roland Emmerich movie. Not that it matters.

It's also funny that even after weeks of training with the monster rover gatlings, when Colonel Sharp pulls a pistol Chick incredulously says "what are you doing with a gun in space?"

Along with Titanic, one of the most heroic supporting casts (the "romantic" leads were terrible) and "action" lead making such a heroic effort to save a terrible film from its terrible director and screenwriter.

i always assumed it was for clearing things out. They weren't really sure what it would look like up there. I'm sure there was abetter way than a machine gun, but it is Michael Bay

Exactly how good would a machine gun, or any gun, work in space with no gravity?
Would it effect the bullet flight?

Almost nothing about this movie makes any sense. In order to enjoy it you have to "turn off your brain" and just embrace the adolescent testosterone fueled schlock.
Independence Day falls in the same category.
Sadly, I have never been able to do this, so I don't like these two movies. I understand why people do. But I just can't do it.
