Martin Scorsese: I'm not a fan of The Sopranos

He does not watch much television, despite having worked on Boardwalk Empire for the last five years: “I don’t have time to watch any other shows, the famous ones. I’ve seen a few episodes of some, in fact. I only watched The Sopranos once or twice. I just couldn’t connect with it. People wonder why I can’t do something with that world now, but it was a different situation to when I was growing up 50 years ago, a different world, the intent is the same, but I won’t get the details right. Basically, I started watching Curb Your Enthusiasm, that is the key one, that is when I realised you could do something on television.” Scorsese even appeared in an episode, playing himself in a season opener.

I couldn't agree more with him on both shows.

Scorsese last best work "The Departed." Was a rip off of a chinese film. I don't think he have time to talk about other shows ideas.

Well if that's the case than he's being very close minded because The Sopranos and Breaking Bad and a few other television shows are much better than a lot of movies these days. Including some Scorsese movies.

He didn't say they were bad. He just said that he didn't connect with them.

Is the author saying Scorsese played himself in Curb? Because he also did so in the Sopranos, though it was a very brief cameo.

which is about as informed of an opinion as if someone were to watch 7 minutes of one of his movies

bullshite. How many episodes of a show should you have to watch before deciding whether you want to continue with the series? The guy answered the question without denigrating The Sopranos. He said that he didn't have time to watch television in general. No reason for this thread or for people to dump on Scorsese for not giving fake Hollywood accolades for a show that he doesn't watch.

I didn't really love the sopranos until a while into the first season.
Maybe the second.
The show doesn't really give a lot of hooks, since it's so good.

It seems he's not a big fan of anything but movies honestly.
I don't take that as a slight on The Sopranos. Probably more so that he just isn't a big fan of TV or books.
Either way it's a good article all together. Thanks for sharing.

He also says he doesn’t read much, sometimes the news. He instead prefers to watch movies. He recently showed Francesca, the youngest of his three daughters, Satyajit Ray’s “The Apu Trilogy”. His passion for cinema is clear from his jury duties. For much of his career the talk was of him continually being snubbed by the Academy until he finally won for The Departed.

quote:More than 2 episodes IMO. Character development takes longer and it takes longer to connect with each one in television compared to movies. I'm not sayin he has to like it but giving up on some television series after 2 episodes does show a lack of patience, which he even seems to admit in the article.

The sopranos is a shite show, filled mostly with cartoon characters played by terrible actors outside of a few exceptions.
Then only props I give this show is it opened the door for other, better shows, to follow.

JMO obviously
It is probably a jealousy issue for Scorsese. In spite of their success many highly accomplished people are very insecure about other highly accomplished people being recognized.
The Sopranos is generally recognized as being one of the greatest if not the greatest send ups of an American mob family ever. That probably pisses of Martin at some level and he can't bring himself to give it a fair shot.
