In an essay she wrote for The New Yorker, published Friday, Ringwald says she began reexamining her films and relationship with Hughes with a newly critical eye after watching The Breakfast Club with her 10-year old daughter. In one particular scene in the film, Judd Nelson's John Bender peeks under her character's skirt, with the camera briefly focusing on her underwear. (Ringwald, who was only a teenager when that film was made, reveals that an older actress was used for the underwear close-up.)

“I kept thinking about that scene,” Ringwald writes. “I thought about it again this past fall, after a number of women came forward with sexual-assault accusations against the producer Harvey Weinstein, and the #MeToo movement gathered steam. If attitudes toward female subjugation are systemic, and I believe that they are, it stands to reason that the art we consume and sanction plays some part in reinforcing those same attitudes.”

“What’s more, as I can see now, Bender sexually harasses Claire throughout the film,” Ringwald argues. “When he’s not sexualizing her, he takes out his rage on her with vicious contempt, calling her 'pathetic,' mocking her as 'Queenie.' It’s rejection that inspires his vitriol. Claire acts dismissively toward him. … He never apologizes for any of it, but, nevertheless, he gets the girl in the end.”

Ringwald also adds, “Back then, I was only vaguely aware of how inappropriate much of John’s writing was, given my limited experience and what was considered normal at the time. I was well into my thirties before I stopped considering verbally abusive men more interesting than the nice ones."

Hope she doesn't read his National Lampoon articles.

Good for her. I expect her to donate future royalties off those films to charity.

God, she sounds like she's turned into a total drag.

A panty scene has gotten her panties all in a twist 30 years later?

And there ya go. That's why John Hughes got teenage human nature.

Hughes may have been a sexist pig, but he was sensitive when it came to Asian stereotypes.

Uh the movie did a damn good job of showing real people struggling with actual issues young people face every day in an interesting way. And bender was an a-hole to everyone. Not just Claire.

Which is exactly like a character like Claire would have actually ended up with bender at the end of the movie. Jesus. 16 year olds have terrible judgment

And there's that word

I never could stand those Hughes epics or Ringwald herself, but I'll say one thing for Molly: she has an awesome rack (Check out Malicious if you don't believe me)

I get so tired of everything being sexist and racist. Again, we will get to a point where these words have no true meaning any more if we aren't there already.

I would love to read her treatise on the beach volleyball scene in Top Gun. Newsflash: sexualization is one of the main reasons teenagers go see films. The target demographic of The Breakfast Club were teenagers. Kids that age act and say things like that.

Did she miss the part where all the kids realized that they were wearing masks to cover up their insecurities and that Bender's profane and aggressive behavior were a direct attempt to inflict the same misery on other people that his parents inflicted on him?

Did she not realize that the whole fricking point of the movie is to look past the things people say and the clothes they wear and who their parents are and find real, genuine connections with people who may seem wholly repulsive to you upon first glance?

But no, obviously people find kinship with Bender because he's mean and gross. FFS

Washed up old ugly bitches like Molly Ringwald that go back in the past and literally study every moment in a desperate attempt to get some pub by joining MeToo are why people start tuning out. Well that and half of these actresses said "hell yeah I'll suck it for a part in the movie"

Yeah...Breakfast Club was used as a teaching tool for 30 years in schools.

To break down barriers, confront differences and acknowledge the harmful effects of bullying (Emilio's character)

Breakfast Club is the ultimate SJW movie...

And now it's offensive?

This is the most absurd attention grab since the #metoo movement began.

frick her

The money wasn't inappropriate to her until now after she has spent it.

Hmmm, do inappropriate sexual things for money? Wonder what that makes her?

It really wasn’t even sexual. I think it was very typical of how high school girls and boys behave.
