quote:
King Arthur: I am your king.
Peasant Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?
[Angelic music plays... ] King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis the Peasant: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
This is my favorite scene from that movie

I love the movie, but the ending has always felt a little off to me.
They wanted to do a war scene but ran out of money.
quote:
In a 2017 interview at Indiana University in Bloomington, John Cleese expressed disappointment with the film's conclusion. "'The ending annoys me the most'", he said after a screening of the film on the Indiana campus, adding that "'It ends the way it does because we couldn't think of any other way'".[52] However, scripts for the film and notebooks that are among Michael Palin's private archive, which he donated to the British Library in 2017, do document at least one alternate ending that the troupe considered: "a battle between the knights of Camelot, the French, and the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog".[53][54] Due to the film's small production budget, that idea or a "much pricier option" was discarded by the Pythons in favour of the ending with "King Arthur getting arrested", which Palin deemed "'cheaper'" and "'funnier'".[53]

Teenage me hated the peasant scene when I saw it in the theater. Now I think it's the greatest scene in any comedy, ever.

There is one down voter who needs to have castanets made out of their testicles.
My favorite comedy of all time and I have probably quoted every line from the movie in some situation or another in my life.
A couple of tidbits, in the first draft (which, like the people in charge of the opening credits ended being sacked) they actually found the Holy Grail. They found it in the Holy Grail department at Herrod's. In the witch burning scene if you look closely you can spot Eric Idle biting his sword to keep from cracking up and breaking character before John Cleese says his "because they're made out of wood" line. Cleese paused for different amounts of time before delivering that line from take to take and the take they ended up using was the one where he paused the longest. Also the part where Cleese as Lancelot running toward Swamp Castle was actually shot in England after the rest of the movie had been filmed. Jones and Gilliam decided that the way he originally ran towards the castle looked too silly so they reshot it later. Also if you look really closely there is a modern day boat complete with an outboard motor in the background of one of the shots around the Castle Arrgh towards the very end of the movie.

The comedy like the “curtains” joke above and then you mix in things like “I fart in your general direction”
SO MANY MEMORABLE LINES!!!
It’s an amazing combo of “fart jokes” humor and great dialogue humor! Imo it is the GOLD STANDARD for comedy!

The peasant scene is the best.
King of the who?
Who are the Britons?

Indeed!
'Oh! Now we see the violence inherent in the system! Help, help, I'm being repressed!'

One of my favorite movies of all time, and now my kids have all watched it enough times to quote it freely.
“Who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?”

The brilliance of this movie is that every time you watch it you can find something new that is funny.
In the tower scene with the fruity prince, the whole gag with the guards kills me.
I try to throw the the “uh, uh, if if uh” line in to conversation and see who reacts.

The look on Dennis face when Arthur starts talking about the lady of the lake

Which is always fascinating because the Monty python group don’t like the movie. They’re on record as saying they hated filming it and didn’t think it was funny. The cast and directors didn’t get along during the movie

My favorite is the witch scene.
At the end she shrugs... " that's a fair cop"
The horny nuns is up there as well.
Bring out your dead.
Knights of ni.
Sir robin bravely running away.

you’re aware that the directors were part of the “cast”, yes?
