My biggest takeaway from this is that the Rock has been making movies for 20+ years. Jesus.

Much better movie list than 2023.

Thanks for the reminder of how poorly the Academy did this year:
Virtually no noms for The Passion because it’s a positive film about Jesus and Christianity.
Hilary Swank beats both Annette Bening and Kate Winslet with a one note, boring performance. Bryce Dallas Howard also not nominated for The Village.
Paul Giamatti inexplicably not getting nominated for Sideways.
The Academy got confused thinking they were actually giving Katharine Hepburn a 5th Oscar for one of Cate Blanchett’s worst performances of her career.
No Best Screenplay nod for Tina Fey for Mean Girls, arguably the most influential film of the year.
Million Dollar Baby wins BP over The Aviator, Sideways, Ray, and Finding Neverland. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is also inexplicably not nominated.

The Academy up until the early-00s did a good job of balancing critically acclaimed films and crowd pleasers. Just look back at the 1990-2003:
1990 - Dances With Wolves (blockbuster hit)
1991 - The Silence of the Lambs (blockbuster hit)
1992 - Unforgiven (blockbuster hit)
1993 - Schindler's List (critical darling)
1994 - Forrest Gump (blockbuster hit)
1995 - Braveheart (critical darling)
1996 - The English Patient (critical darling)
1997 - Titanic (blockbuster hit)
1998 - Shakespeare in Love (critical darling)
1999 - American Beauty (critical darling)
2000 - Gladiator (blockbuster hit)
2001 - A Beautiful Mind (critical darling)
2002 - Chicago (blockbuster hit)
2003 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (blockbuster hit)
Starting in about 2004 or so, the indie film craze really took over Hollywood and has never fully gone away.
