My boys (4 and 5) like watching these two movies. M&C is a little gory but neither have cursing or gratuitous sex. Are there any other similar movies that would fit this genre without the cursing and sex that I could get for them to watch?

Note: we also crush The Goonies and The Princess Bride on the regular.

Rob Roy? There'll probably be a few rough parts, though.

That's a tall order.

I mean you have a book in Monte Cristo that is maybe the best adventure story of all-time outside of The Odyessey.

I don't think there's a whole lot out there that matches them.

You can watch the Depardieu Monte Cristo mini-series.

I wish they had done a trilogy of Master and Commander.

White Squall is a good mention, solid movie.

But there's not a whole lot of historical sailing movies.

You could watch Horatia Hornblower on TV but that's about as close as you'll get to Master and Commander unless someone will correct me.

Treasure Island
Swiss Family Robinson
Moby Dick
Hook
Shipwrecked
Treasure of Matecumbe

Maybe a Huck Finn/Tom Sawyer movie but I'm not sure which adaptation is the best.

Also, Three Musketeers but I am also not sure which adaptation is the best.

Disney made an adaptation of The Three Musketeers back in the 90s that sounds right up your alley. Funnier than the 2 you listed and has a great cast.

The 70s adaptation makes for a good watch also.

Also consider Man in the Iron Mask. Should be tame enough.

Robin Hood w/Errol Flynn

The Crimson Pirate w/Burt Lancaster

Gregory Peck did a version of Hornblower, but it's OK at best. However he also did a similar film called The World In His Arms (about a seal hunting sea captain fighting Russians in Alaska in the 1850s) that is very entertaining. (This being a '50s movie there is no graphic footage of the seal hunt). Anthony Quinn steals the film as a rival ships captain.

The Vikings w/Kirk Douglas

If they're willing watch Black & White:

Mutiny On The Bounty
The Sea Hawk
The Buccaneer
-- Cecil B. DeMille's version of Jean Lafitte and the Battle of New Orleans (original version w/Fredric March!). Has a great scene of a swordfight in the dungeon of the Cabildo
The Sea Wolf w/Edward G. Robinson

Yeah that occurred to me too... It's a favorite of mine, but might be a bit risque for little kids

The first few Pirates of the Caribbean movies are good. They have the nautical themes from Master & Commander and the swordsmanship from Count of Monte Cristo. Best of both worlds.

I just remembered the various versions of Prisoner of Zenda. The '37 is the best, though the '52 is in color. The Great Race has a long section spoofing PoZ.

The Black Shield of Falworth -- the movie in which Tony Curtis does not say "Yonda lies da castle uh my faddah" -- is an entertaining tale of knighthood set in the age of Robin Hood. It's based on a novel by Howard Pyle, whose turn of the century works did so much to bring Robin Hood back to prominence.

Nate and Hayes with Tommy Lee Jones is basically PotC 20 years before, but I love the characters a lot more. Great movie.

Here ya go. Two movies

Admiral

Interesting pieces of history rarely talked about. Best naval battles you will see.

Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter was a Dutch admiral. He was one of the most skilled admirals in history, most famous for his role in the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 17th century.

The Admiral

In October 1597, a Japanese fleet of 330 ships tried to attack the small Korean fleet of 13 ships.

John Paul Jones, movie from 1959 w/ Robert Stack. He is buried at Annapolis in a special place. Just FYI if you tour the Naval Academy.

Shogun, it is TV series so not sure where to find it. They may be a little young for this one though.
