The entire glorious ending is based on the fact that Vito has the same car knowledge as Mona Lisa. He sees the pictures she took and comes to he realization.
Nothing I remember in the entire movie sets him as an auto expert. How else does he get this brilliant insight to put her on the stand?

he had been dating her for YEARS,, it was what she knew... helping her dad run the shop

I feel like there was probably a higher baseline of cars and car repair knowledge in the general population back then as well.

Owl,
So you’re saying he just put her on HOPING she would have a magic bullet of info to save the day OR they would spend random hours discussing rear wheel slip differential on different makes and models of cars, and imparted that knowledge to her?

I always thought that about that scene too. It's like they wanted a gotcha moment for the audience more than a good back story of them talking about that before going into court.
Posted on 1/5/24 at 7:48 pm to CovingtonTigre
That could've been common talk during their foreplay like when she's talking about tightening the leaky faucet.

And it worked. Foreshadowing that angle would've made the court scene fall flat.

Yes of course, just wish they would have written it a different way.

He didn’t get prep work for court done for years because there was not time between working in her fathers garage and whatever else he said in that line.

When you drive around in old pieces of shite like Vinnies car you know how to work on them.

Exactly. I always took it as he worked in the garage for years and that’s where they met. Then he did law school at night while continuing to work

Maybe she made the whole thing up to get out of there because her biological clock was ticking

I’m pretty sure it’s mentioned during the movie that he also worked as a mechanic.

Curious how many people knew the '63 Tempest had independent rear suspension before that movie came out.
*It also had a 4 cylinder available that was half a 389 and had a "rope" driveshaft. GM had some pretty innovative cars in the early 60s including a couple with turbos.
