My eternal Fast Times at Ridgemont High question

When Damone tells Mark Ratner to play side one of Zeppelin 4 to impress Stacy, and moments later, we hear Kashmir from Physical Graffiti.
Is there some explanation for this? I've always wondered.

It is showing how Ratner manages to frick everything up on the date, even the wrong Led Zeppelin album.

Yeah, I don't think it was a goof. It's showing dude can't get right.

Inside joke too, considering Cameron Crowe is a huge Zeppelin fan.

Wonder how Damone is doing with sites like Stubhub around these days?

"When it comes to making out..."
They weren't making out, they were driving to a restaurant.
I honestly don't think it's a goof like some guy who posted on IMDB claims. I just think he used Zep to show where Rat wanted to go with Stacy, he was all in and obviously looking to hook up with all his sexual frustration - so he's full of anticipation - of later playing Zep IV when they start making out - which playing another Zep song reflects...(he's anticipating playing Zep 1V...and he's nervous.) It's telling the audience about him and setting it up - he buys Demones advice and also is confused and nervous.

Well, even in the little written snippet at the end of the movie, they say he's working at 7-11.

I don't think guys like Damone generally turn out too good. Spicoli probably had a better future.

Hahah, I forgot about that.

True. The part where he is being interviewed and he stops and says "Hey were did you get that jacket?" and the reporter just says "The network gave it to me"
shite gets me everytime.

Stu Nahan: "You know, a lot of people expected maybe Mark 'Cutback' Davis or Bob 'Jungle Death' Gerrard would take the honors this year."
Spicoli: "Those guys are f*gs!"
Stu Nahan: "That's fantastic."

Stacy "Are you ok"
Demone "I think I came. Didnt you feel it?"
Stacy " I guess so"

Yeah, I also very much doubt that it's a "goof." Crowe knows very well which album that song is from.
I always suspected that Damone was trying to cock block Ratner. I love Zeppelin and 4 is a great album, but side 1 is hardly "make-out music." I thought either Ratner was screwing it up (as suggested), that he'd made a better choice of Zeppelin music or that there is a deleted scene in which he discovers that he doesn't own Zep 4.

The song was supposed to be Stairway to Heaven
Crowe tried in vain, several times to get the license for the song. In fact, he said he wouldn't have made Almost Famous had he known he wouldn't have secured the license for a famous deleted scene from that film.
Zeppelin likes Crowe (Nancy Wilson used to be the go between), and have licensed other works for his films (and he didn't direct Fast Times), but they just don't do that for Stairway.

Love that part.
To put into perspective, perhaps, how mature he was then (Fast Times was released 4 days before his 22nd birthday), when he was auditioning for the film, literally the only thing he'd done, film-wise, was Taps. When Amy Heckerling asked, "What do you do in Taps?", he responded, "I was the conscience of the film."
The fact that he's crazier than a $hithouse rat does not change the fact that underneath the awesomeness that was Spicoli, was a very mature for his age young actor.
I hate what he became, personally, but his first 2 movies were A grade performances, as was his performance in Mystic River.

What was the deleted Almost Famous scene?

While I do not agree with him politaclly, I respect him for what he has been doing for Haiti. Look it up. He deserves respect for that.
Sidling up next to Chavez ia another matter though. Although Joe Kennedy sure gave (well deserved, IMHO) props to Chavez recently for supplying home heatting oil for poor and elderly in the US when our own corporations refused to.

I'm at work, so I'm not sure the music works on this one. (Google is your friend, by the way.)

I think it was left in, intentionally, to generate this kind of discussion and to be an Easter Egg, of sorts.

That is a great scene. Watching McDormand slowly get into the song is a thing of beauty.
