New Girl really fell off a cliff there at the end

Fiancé and I have been watching it over the past few months in the evenings and we just finished last night. I had never watched it start to finish. Overall, it’s a good show and I think the name doesn’t fit the show.
First few seasons were great, but I think it started to decline around season five, going into season six, ultimately culminating with the complete disaster that is season seven. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a show fall off a cliff quite like new girl did in it’s the seventh and final season season. The show was basically unwatchable at the end, they seemed to gut all of the good characters. Schmidt became a background character. Cece, who was never and will never be funny, became one of the most prominent characters. Nick was good up until season 7 and even had a couple classic moments during that season, but it was almost like a completely different character. Winston is basically the only character that didn’t change and he certainly saved the finale. The prank was an incredible ending.
I think the most annoying part was for the first five or so seasons, it wasn’t political. There would be minor comments here and there (Outside of the presidential election episode) but overall the focus was elsewhere. Season 7 was just propaganda out of a fire hose in every scene. Schmidt and Cece flipping gender roles, naming their kid after Ginsburg, the woman empowerment birthday party, Jess telling the dude who hired her to essentially be a secretary that they are “equals” and him agreeing. The entire season was just silly, like they knew the show was ending so they wanted to throw in as much propaganda as possible with their fate already decided.

It was east to binge the first time I watched it.
Tried to do a re-watch recently and found it incredibly annoying.

It definitely sputtered towards the finale. Stil the final scene of them playing True American with their kids in the future was a touching way to end the show.

It fell off a cliff after Megan Fox left and Zooey Deschanel returned.

Except for the Trubisky jerseys. They whiffed on that one

Her whole "I am way smarter, and always better at everything than everyone" schtick wore thin very quickly.
I see Regan as the Nellie Bertram of New Girl

But the show worked better with her than it did after her.

Yeah that's a weird a complaint. She was intentionally a bad character and the opposite of Jess, (cold and serious) to make Jess look better

Eh, overall they definitely made him dumber and more of a punchline over the last few seasons. He went from the often voice of reason to a cartoon character for jokes.

I didn't enjoy Nick as the desperate simp to a heartless bitch. It wasn't interesting and you knew it was short lived. I don't have any idea what you mean. It didn't work, she was shitty like she was supposed to be.

I didnt Like the Megan Fox stuff but there is some good stuff in the later seasons.
Zooey Deschanel having a kid mid season and the network basically giving them 8 episodes to wrap the whole series probably didn’t help.

The quality dropped off a bit towards the end but not because it got “too political”. You’re just seeking that out as something to pin it on. New girl being too political is quite the take
For example tho:
What part of the show ever made you think Schmidt would fall under a traditional father/gender role? His entire schtick is almost entirely built around the fact that he ISNT traditional in that way in his personality/masculinity

Character development was a major issue and the show just flat out wasn’t funny at the end.

Season 7 only. It was wildly political after the show wasn’t political at all prior. I don’t think it’s quite the take:
- kid named after an extreme left-wing Supreme Court justice
- Kids third birthday is women empowerment themed
-We spent 15 minutes on a meeting Jess is left out of a meeting she “belongs in” because she is a woman. Obviously she got it wrong, but it doesn’t change the narrative prior to that.
- Nick Miller, who stands for nothing the entire show, comes out as pro-choice
- Jess teaching a three year old that a color and a shape can be called anything it wants (Obvious what that was subliminal messaging for)
And that is just the first two episodes alone of season 7.
You can disagree that it went too far, but to pretend that I’m stretching to say the show got political is objectively false.

That’s a fair counter on that one.

I have to say , I binged the whole show a few years ago and watched the final season weekly as it was airing …
I remember almost nothing from that show. Other than true American and the reveal of Schmdits first name which was great.

Winston was the voice of reason for several seasons. Then, he became this anxious unhinged lunatic. Both versions were funny, but he had nothing approaching a consistent character.

This. Schmidt’s entire character was a subversion of the expected trope of the hyper masculine, dumb, lady’s man sitcom character. He’s essentially the anti-Joey. His whole career arc revolved around taking the trope of a woman breaking into the “boy’s club” and trying to be taken seriously as more than a piece of meat, and flipping the roles. Schmidt, as a man, was working in a hostile office of all women who treated him like a sex object rather than a coworker.
At home, he was the “mom” of the group, always caring about fashion, cleanliness, and keeping up appearances.
Schmidt struggling with traditional gender roles as a husband and father was one of the few creative decisions that worked in the last season. It was completely in line with his character arc of showing the struggles of young women in male dominated work places, but through the eyes of a man.

I wouldn’t have even called him sort of goofy at the beginning

Coach was the best character, after he left it was all downhill. Even his return later couldn’t save it
Honestly don’t remember anything from the series outside of true American
