New Oscars Rule: If You Don’t See All The Nominated Films, You Can’t Vote

Oscar voters will no longer be able to cast final ballots in categories in which they haven’t seen all of the nominees, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday.
The new rule is the most significant in a group of regulations approved by the AMPAS Board of Governors for the 98th Academy Awards, which will take place in March 2026.
In the past, Oscar voters had been on the honor system; they were encouraged to see every nominee before voting for the winners, but the Academy did not make it a requirement in most categories.

The new rule applies on a category-by-category basis, so voters can vote in the categories where they have seen all the nominees and abstain in categories where they haven’t.

With all the nominees available on the members-only Academy Screening Room, it will be both easier for members to see everything and easier for the Academy to verify that they have done so.
The Academy also plans to institute a “seen elsewhere” component so that members who view films in theaters or outside the ASR will be able to assert that they have seen the nominated films.

Long overdue, IMO.

Oscars lost relevance about a decade ago. Nobody gives a shite what woke movies they prop up.

How the hell was this not already a rule? Yea
Posted on 4/21/25 at 7:03 pm to Kinderman
Too late, they’ve already lost all credibility
Posted on 4/21/25 at 7:07 pm to Kinderman
How would they even enforce this?

How do they get away with their affirmative action requirements? This rule is almost as stupid. The people who vote all have personal assistants and no honesty. I guess you don't even need the personal assistant; just turn on the streaming movie and go do something else.

Next Oscar rule:
You cannot vote unless you are a member of an underrepresented community

If Oppenheimer qualified as DEI, any movie can.

This rule has been in place for the best foreign film category … it’s enforced on the academy screening room where you have to stream the titles and the system monitors your viewing completion. I suppose one could have an assistant watch the titles … but only a small percentage of the members have assistants or would risk expulsion for doing what we should do and really should enjoy anyway. The rule is much needed, but it’s hard to see everything in all categories

And somewhere all 20 Oscar fans rejoiced

20 years ago. Broke Back Mountain was released in 2005.

Shows what a joke this award has been that it’s taken until now for this to be a rule.

They have let people vote forever without watching the films?

Still on the honor system. You could just put on screeners and walk away.

So the small group that votes will be even smaller, depending on category.

This will make them less relevant because the people who vote in these things only like artsy crap the public doesn't care about.

This should have always been the rule, didn't "12 years a slave" win but wasn't viewed by an overwhelming majority of the voters?
Posted on 4/22/25 at 7:28 am to Kinderman
Why wouldn't you want to watch all of the films of you're an Oscar voter? The only situation I see is if these are life long voters and eventually lose interest in films but don't want to give up the "prestige" of being a voter. In which case, term limit.

If you want to see the movies you care about getting awarded, watch the Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice awards.

What does this new rule have to do with artsy vs popular?
