I watched it for the first time last night. I enjoy thrillers so I thought it was a good pick.
Not sure how I completely missed this when it came out a few years back.
I am not sure if you could make this movie in 2021 as it may cause anti-Southeastern Asian sentiment.

Never heard of it, thanks for the tip. Looks like it even had a decent box office. I read a couple of interesting reviews. Horribly clichéd, no political context is given, no reason for why everyone hates Americans, but it's a slick thrill ride!

Saw it in theaters. It's really good and INTENSE AS frick. And it surprised me that most people have never heard of it.
But it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time and feels like it's pretty realistic for the most part.
Really good movie.

I just read the description for this movie. It reminds me of this recent OT thread:
https://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/o-t-lounge/short-documentary-shows-how-inmates-run-the-prisons-in-venezuela/95467921/
Although the trailer kinda looks like Mad Max without vehicles.

No Escape (1994) is easily procured through other less-savory means. It looks interesting and I like Ray Liotta, I'll probably give it a watch tonight.

I just recently saw this a few months ago. I love movies like that. Yall should check out “The Wave” and “The Quake.” Its foreign and isnt based on real events, but its a similar feel as “No Escape.”

Watched a few weeks ago, damn it was intense.

Damnit was coming here to post that, must have watched that movie 100 times back when it was on whatever movie channel it was on

I can still here Liotta screaming on The Prevue Channel - “You want it?? COME AND GET IT!!!”

And yes the 2015 version is intense. And Lake Bell

No doubt. I'd like to watch it now that I have a kid of my own. I remember being stressed the frick out watching it in the theater and wondering what I would do if that was my family. So now that I have a family of my own, I bet the movie hits a little differently. One thing I remember liking about it was that once the shite hits the fan, it basically doesn't slow down much until it's over. It's just a pretty nonstop adrenaline ride.

OK I watched it, and yup, like everyone is saying, once the action starts you're on the edge of your seat for the rest of the movie.
I wanted to offer a partial defense from the charges of stereotype-filled xenophobia from the reviews I read (that I mentioned in my post above).
On one hand, the "Kan Chow Chicken" scene, and the opium den / brothel scene weren't really necessary,
but there was a very reasonable political backstory explaining the anger, and it wasn't all "scary unidentified brown people hating Americans."
At least three of the natives helped out the family, and two of them did it at risk to their own lives. So there was a distinction between the rebels and ordinary citizens who showed compassion for the scared foreign family.
The reason for the uprising, the private foreign control of water, is a real and timely issue. I first heard about this years ago when I read about protests in Bolivia. Right now the big story is what's going on in Chile, but this is happening all over the world, including at the local level in the US. For a more nuanced view and history on the the subject, I found this really interesting academic article.
And finally, Brosnan's character concedes that it was nefarious foreign influence that created the situation in the first place, so the charges of naked xenophobia are simply false. That being said, this movie was made just six years ago; would it be green-lighted today?
