I rarely hear anything about this movie and pretty much never see it playing on any movie channel. It's long but I like this movie a lot. The rape scene with a young Dinero is disturbing but overall I think it's one of the better crime/ mob movies made. Anyone agree?

One of my top ten all time.

Incredible cast and amazing soundtrack.

Way better than Goodfellas as far as a movie that spans multiple decades.

The story behind the production and release is interesting. There's like 5 different cuts of the movie, and by all accounts, the original theatrical cut sucks, and you need to watch the complete, uncut 4 hour version to really get the film.

I bought the DVD years ago, and it features one of the longer cuts. Great movie, although can be slow at times. But if we're being honest, it's not as enjoyable as goodfellas.

Edit- the story is more interesting than goodfellas, but it is tough to sit thru a 3+ hour film that drags at times.

Yeah I've read there were a few different cuts. I believed I watched the 4 hour one. I thought it was a very good movie.

It's one of my favorite movies. The cop fricking that 13 yr old really blew my mind. Maybe that was normal? Who the hell knows.

I've only seen the four hour cut. It's incredible.

And nowadays it seems easy to pause a movie halfway through. Considering many popular TV shows are like 10 hour movies, I don't mind waiting until the next day to finish something really long.

My only criticism is the kid that got shot. You get no background on him. I'm not even sure he has a name. Just some 12 yr old kid that's there, gets gunned down and not even a mention of him again.

He was and then he died and then the movie went on.

I don't think it would've been real necessary to establish Dom in a film that was already 4 hours long.

As you said, he died and then the movie went on. It was a brief sad moment, but really the main purpose that he serves in the story is that his murder causes Noodles to retaliate and advances the backstory of the central character. The next time the rest of the crew sees Noodles is like 15 years later.

The scene when young Noodles and Max get the shite beat out of them by Bugsy's crew is one of the most brutally violent scenes in a movie.

Actually, there are a number of scenes in this that are hard to sit through (obviously the rape scenes, the telephone ringing, the spoon stirring the coffee cup, etc.) and the last half hour or so is really bizarre, but damn if it isn't a great film.

Damn that part to hell. I absolutely can't stand that part.

Great movie though.

Siskel and Ebert weren't too kind to it in their review when it first came out.

Because the studio executives trimmed the US theatrical release to like 2 hours long and in chronological order.

I think you're wrong on Ebert though. He saw the original version at Cannes and gave it a positive review (4*) while also bashing the cut American version, but unfortunately that was the only one available to American audiences at the time.
