I loved Creed; it was a great film. But why did they make Adonis Apollo's illegitimate son, as opposed to the son he had with Mary Anne that made a brief appearance in Rocky II (along with his sister)? Where's the other son, Adonis's half-brother?

Because that kid would be 40+ years old now.
As it is Michael B. Jordan was born 2 years after Rocky IV - that's about as stretchy as you can get.

Did you see the mansion Mary Ann still lived in? Apollo's kids were soft trust fund babies. They needed a higher with some fire.....some pain....a harsh back story...thus the reform school bastard child

Rocky 4 takes place immediately after Rocky 3 which was in 1982. Rocky comes home for Paulie's bday IMMEDIATELY after sparring with Apollo as the favor for training him.
And presumably a few weeks/months later Apollo is dead.
so unless retroactively, rocky 3 takes place in the future, the timeline is all fricked

Adonis being Creed's bastard son drives the whole movie. He is out to prove that he's not a mistake. He says this at the end

Yeah, I was trying to work out the timeline in my head while watching it and thought it was a bit off.

Well, the museum had a banner that said 1990 at the end of Rocky 5, so...
