Quint’s death in Jaws is an incredible scene

Just Jaws for the first time in a while.
The way it jumps on the boat.
It’s massive mouth moving up and down.
That scream.
Chief’s face watching in horror.
GOAT death scene.
GOAT movie.

I do agree with you. But the shark “jumping on the boat” and the mouth moving were both so overly ridiculous and fake looking.
I mean come on, sharks don’t do this:
Makes you glad the shark malfunctioned a ton and they were only able to show it minimally onscreen. Definitely made the movie a hundred times better that way.
Don’t forget the blood coming out of Quint’s mouth too.
That being said though, it’s all awesome. Badass movie.

I think the sounds help it a lot too. If I’m not mistaken it gets real quiet and you’re just able to experience all of the noise without hearing any background music.

Agree. You can see the rubber teeth bend when it is chomping down on the air tank later. This is what Speilberg wanted; a lot of shots of the shark. Thank goodness for the malfunctions that forced him to keep it unseen and underwater.

Scarred me as a kid and still disturbs me

I think you are right. You could really hear the agony he was in and trying to not get eaten.

Agreed. Saw it about 3 times during shark week recently. It’s one of those movies for me that if I am channel surfing and land on it, it stays there

True, but it is still better than a lot of the CGI fails we get these days.

This is a huge pet of it.
No music at all in that scene.

I once pulled a 4- to 5-foot bull shark into a boat in a net doing some research, and it absolutely did that. Head and tail movement side-to-side as it chomped.

Quints character build up makes that scene. You really believe he was absolutely terrified of that shark

He was. His story about the Indianapolis sets the stage for it. It’s why he hunted sharks he hated them. His biggest fear was being in that situation again which is why he said he would never wear a life jacket again. He’d rather drown than float around waiting to get eaten. When he realizes they’re beaten and may sink it’s why he goes mad and blows the engine, his fear overtook him and he had no control so he desperately tries to race to shore.

Quint’s death
Dude. Spoilers!

It wasn’t back then.
I’d trade all modern cgi for a crop of writers, actors, and directors from decades past.
I’d take that tradeoff

As a kid - that was haunting to watch. Quint doesn’t die in the book.

My all time favorite movie

We watch it on or around every July 4th. Never gets old.

Sure he does. In the book, there is only one survivor - Chief Brody. Quint is pulled under and drowns due a harpoon rope wrapped around his leg.

It is very good. Quint and his heavy breathing, almost child like whining knowing he is going to die by something that killed his friends and cohorts after the ship went down.
Better than Luke Skywalker throwing his light saber away and drinking green seal milk...
Could not help myself with that damn near 200 post thread over a shitty series I will never watch.
