Rank the seasons of The Wire (no spoilers please)

I'm about 8 episodes into season 2 and I'm starting to enjoy this show a lot more. I know in this board's opinion it could be the best show of all time, which is why I was so looking foward to watching it. I'll be honest though, season 1 was VERY slow for almost the entire season, so I was a bit let down. I was going to give it a 1 more season commitment before deciding on if I wanted to keep watching, and season 2 has come through. Very entertaining. So with that said, and without giving away important things I haven't watched yet, how would yall rank the seasons?

I don't know how you could possibly think this, in all respect.
Omar dropping Stink and then Kima getting shot by Lil Man and Bey were what made me fall in love with the show.

That's called character development. Most 1 hour dramas have MAYBE 3 central characters with MAYBE 5 ancillary characters. The Wire has nearly 20 central characters per season, and the supporting cast almost doubles that.

I'm currently on season 3 and I agree with the OP, the first season was pretty slow almost the whole way through. Is it possible that your quote above is so exciting due to everything else being a little slow? I enjoy the show, but still don't see it as an all time great show...yet.

Only for like the first 7 episodes. The 8th episode is the magical episode where you start to realize how good this show might just be.

Weird. Most people dislike S2 the first time around.
I'd rank them:
3 4 (interchangeable but I give the upper hand to S3 because that is the season where everything changes and shite gets real)

I know what they're saying as far as season 1 being slow, it didn't get going until episode 10, IMO, though I still enjoyed the season as a whole.
I'd go:
4- best stuff I've ever watched on TV, period.
3- Marlo/Stringer/Avon story was great
5- A little unbelievable at times, but loved the media angle and the finale
1- Started slow, but once it got going, it really got going
2- Last only because of the lack of action. I loved the story and thought the season was necessary, just kinda boring, IMO

A couple posters above harped on this. The whole season wasn't slow, just about the first half. I think most of that has to do with the fact that I didn't know the characters yet and there wasn't a lot of action. With a show like Dexter for instance, you're instantly connected with Dexter (probably because he talks to you) and there's always shite going down each episode. In S1 it took a while to build up to shite happening. At first it was basically just like me sitting in on someone's office watching them do their job.
But now in season 2, I know the characters and I'm very anxious to see how the dock/crate girl stories work themselves out.

The thing with The Wire is its all fricking good, theres not really a bad season just some slightly better than others.

I'm pumped about that!
Another question, does the S5 finale just end the season like all the other seasons do, or is it more of a complete series finale?

Ton of scenes that'll give you flashbacks of old seasons, really little stuff but you'll definitely remember
I liked the ending.
