Fess Parker played the title role, Ed Ames was his sidekick Mingo.

Cranked up in the late 60's. The early black and white versions were especially good.

One of the best tomahawk demonstrations ever was done by Ames (MINGO), on the tonight show.

Correct way to throw a tomahawk

Wasn’t he a man? A big man? Seems like I remember the bear was bigger.

The racist version of that song was a schoolyard staple.

Tv's Daniel Boone

As popular as Parker was as Davey Crockett, I preferred the Boone series. His sidekicks were impressive. Jimmy Dean, Ed Ames, Rosie Greer...

Remember him? Hell, I met him when Fess Parker was the celebrity guest at the Colfax Pecan Festival.

They sold a lot of coonskin caps that year (which the real Boone didn’t wear).

Fess developed a winery in CA that is still going, and it’s really good wine.

I heard that version before the actual theme song (never saw the show until much later)

George Reeves had been dead for almost 20 years (and I had never seen the show) but I still heard on the playground about how "Superman killed himself by jumping off a building with his cape on, thinking he could fly."

From the legendary TV Western thread:

Daniel Boone - "Nightmare" (watch on YouTube

On the trail the Boone family is attacked by renegade Shawnees. When Daniel is captured, his young son Israel must somehow rescue him.

One of the best episodes of the series, an action-filled classic that is basically one long chase. Direction credited to veteran George Marshall (The Blue Dahlia, Destry Rides Again)
