There is a direct correlation between Uncle Baby Billy screen time and the funniness of the episode
no question. this has been the best baby billy season yet.

You are not alone. They did her character a disservice with the younger version of her in the throwback episode. I also thought it was weird they used a heftier guy for the younger version of the Stiffler character

I think it’s setting up for Baby Billy dying unfortunately. The conversations he’s been having with Tiffany are foreshadowing I feel like.

“It’s called ACTING, dear boy.” while wearing the wig. So good.

Jesse’s wife is smoke and I have always thought so.

This episode overall to me was just ok. Maybe I’m just comparing everything after the The Lake house episode to it. That was a top 3 to 5 episode for me.

She looks really good in Longmire as his daughter.

She was great as Cady Longmire from an acting standpoint too.

As the show is winding down I have to say this is for sure the worst McBride HBO comedy. Had high hopes bc with Vice Principles and Eastbound and Down I would literally be in tears or have laugh out loud moments every episode. I can probably count on my hands how many times I've done that on my hands for this entire series.

Sound like a downer but just legit not that funny, especially compared to his previous two works. Obviously some highlights with Baby Billy and Judy but just so many unfunny characters.

we can agree to disagree but, this show has greater aspirations than just slapstick comedy and ridiculous situations. It has something to say

I appreciate that and I think this is easily McBride best work and one of the most engaging TV shows in recent years

Agreed, this show has had much more depth than his previous efforts.

We're currently rewatching Eastbound and Down and it doesn't hold up nearly as well as Vice Principals. And while it had it's moments, Righteous Gemstones have been consistently funnier throughout.

Yea, would definitely have to agree to disagree.

Not really sure what it's aspirations are and what it's trying to say but when it all boils down it's a comedy. And a comedy that has had quite a lot of episodes over the course of four seasons with basically nothing funny in it and numerous terrible characters that try real hard to ruin even the good episodes.

I freaking LOVE McBride, so I say all this but I don't hate the show. But even Jesse was extremely lame in season one and they clearly didn't know what to do with his character. Was he a good guy, an a-hole, a little bit of both. So they start making him a little more like Kenny Powers in seasons two and it still didn't work that great. Hard disagree it's his best work, and the fact that Kelvin is still on the show takes it down below the others. Just a completely awful, unfunny character, and I'm also a Adam Devine fan. But he is all time bad.

family, fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters, faith, prosperity gospel, mendacity, compassion, empathy, hypocrisy, love and hate, wrath and consequences, redemption and forgiveness...

theres a lot there besides comedy

also, this show is far better produced and shot than previous shows. from costumes to allusions to other works to framing to editing etc its a standout. the prelude episode to star this season was an all timer as far as production craft is concerned.

others may disagree certainly, but this show is way more than comedy. matter of fact i'm of the opinion that comedy is secondary

I'm actually rewatching E&D as well so that's why it was on my mind Personally like Vice Principles better but I still think E&D holds up. The offensive humor stands out even more now as "how the world did they get away with saying that/they could never say that on TV nowadays."

The point of my post wasn't trying to convince anyone that this isn't funny, just stating my personal preference and that as a whole, I was overall pretty disappointed with the show. Just not must watch TV for me like I was hoping that's all. Can't see myself ever rewatching it.

This show isn’t just a dumb slapstick comedy though, it’s got a little more depth. I agree the slapstick stuff isn’t as good as it is in his other shows (maybe I’m just getting older).

This show is like bizzaro world Succession

Yeah the first three seasons of Gemstones are very, very strong. Everyone knew Season 3 was where they originally planned to end it because the season finale wraps up everything perfectly. Season 4 is good, not great but it has given us one of the top 3 episodes of the series and Baby Billy has had some of his best one liners of the show this season and I’m looking forward to seeing how crazy the Dr. Watson story gets

I can't remember what show I was watching (maybe Hacks) where the end of a season would've been a good place to "wrap things up".

With the idiot running HBO/Max that wants to cut out a bunch of good shows that they think cost too much to make, I wonder how many of these shows are having to create season finales with potential series endings because they're waiting so long to renew a show.

that and having to wait 2-3 years between seasons for shows like House of Dragons, Last of Us.. it’s insanity

Come on man. This isn’t some higher aspiration or saying more. It’s a show based on a family, saying all that is kind of stating the obvious

Agree.

Yea I’d disagree. The story isn’t that great to make me think the comedy is secondary. Like I say, not trying to hate on it, bc I like it, but other than a few characters and moments it’s very forgettable. Glad others feel different and I hope it makes money because I’d love for MAX to give McBride the green light for another show.

Around season 3 Baby Billy should have taken over the church. They missed a great storyline there.
