But it still has subtle humor.
I cracked up when the dying boy said he wasn’t getting into heaven for killing people in the war…
“Uh uh. I heard they changed that.
Who changed it?
God”

I'm wondering if the Prelude was used to start production without the cast and sets while they scrambled to get the series running after their unexpected renewal. One named actor, very minimal sets with a lot being shot in forests and pastures, an easier script since you're working with one character arc instead of half a dozen... seems like a perfect device to stall the audience with a great episode outside of the Gemstones universe.

+1

Just seemed like an odd episode to me. I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong, but i'm not as blown away as others have been saying about it.

They write the season as a whole so don’t think they were scrambling

This season will revolve around the legacy of the gemstones and the golden bible.

McBride is a film maker and I think he just wanted to start off utilizing some of his skills.

That's about right. You can only have them learn a valuable lesson only to go right back to what they always do so many times

Yep. I picked up Apple TV a couple of months back because there were enough shows I wanted to watch to justify the price. Started watching Mythic Quest the other day and powered through the first three seasons. That show should have ended after Season 2. Season 3 is just painful. Apparently, it finds its stride again in Season 4, but Season 3 was so awful, I really don't care.

Episode 1 was decent, but def felt like more of a drama than a comedy.

Watched the final trailer early yesterday and have to say it didn’t look good at all. Holding out hope for a good season, but like we discussed months back, the ending to last season would have been the perfect send off.

I turned it off. Wasn’t bad but I was looking for some irreverent comedy and that wasn’t it.

It was different to be sure. I enjoyed it, though.

I thought it was a good table setter for the final season.

I like the first episode it set in to show narrative Gemstone history how the family became as committed to God in preaching as they did

As a preacher's kid I appreciate the fact that they have characters that display sincere belief .
There's a lot of humor and there are some ridiculous things in religion that they rightfully make fun of but real faith is something that can be appreciated

I still think that the sparseness of it was intentional, giving them extra time to get the usual production process going. If you're mapping out the entire season, giving yourself an easier start seems pretty advantageous.

You don't think it took a considerable amount of time for the costume department set department, and design department to all go out and get civil War-era costumes ,machinery and props as opposed to using the stuff they had lying around

I wasn’t expecting that from the first episode but I have to say I enjoyed it.

I get where you’re coming from but that episode was written first. They write the whole season then block of 3 months to film in South Carolina.

The whole production was planned out before they shot a frame.

yeah that was definitely NOT a delay tactic…that episode was meticulously crafted and probably extremely expensive to produce

kudos to Danny McBride who wrote and directed that. The dude has range. That was some powerful stuff

This show continues to contain multitudes

That was one of the best episodes of television I’ve seen.

It totally subverted my expectations and I didn’t get quite the irreverent humor I tuned in for…but I left blown away.

I’d put that up against any short film nominated for an Oscar this year, that’s for sure.

That was an entertaining and elaborate way to get Bradley Cooper an Emmy for Guest Actor on a Comedy. As good as it was, the preview made me a little disappointed we have to wait another week to get some Judy and BJ.

Whoah now. It was good, but I wouldn’t even say it was the best episode of this series.

“Say a prayer for my soul.”
“Uh, I did already. Yeah, it’s done. I’ve been praying this whole time, silently, in my mind.”
“Can you say it out loud?”
“There’s no need. I’m very confident that the Lord hears me.”
“Can you say it so I can hear it? I’m scared.”
“Okay, well, just give me a second…if I could just think about the right words.”
“Please….”
“All right, just give me a second, Jesus Christ.”

that could have come straight out of Jesse’s mouth LOL
