Johnny Crawford, the original Mouseketeer who starred as the young son of the Civil War veteran portrayed by Chuck Connors on the 1958-63 ABC series The Rifleman, died Thursday, it was announced. He was 75.

In 2019, it was revealed that Crawford had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease .... Crawford was 12 when he appeared for the first time as Mark McCain, son of the widower Lucas McCain, on The Rifleman.

The Four Star Television series, set in the New Mexico Territory with storylines crafted by Sam Peckinpah, ran for five seasons, from September 30, 1958, to April 8, 1963, and then for decades in syndication and reruns.

Sad news. MeTV has the Rifleman on weekday afternoons and it was a pretty good show, especially the first couple seasons

I catch this sometimes on Grit TV. Not a bad show.

Grit is a great channel...The Virginian, Tales of West Fargo, Wyatt Earp, Death Valley Days, and my personal favorite Laramie.

Pluto TV has a channel that shows nothing but The Rifleman. Before that, I would catch it Saturday mornings on MeTV. I think it's a great show and Crawford was a talented child actor.

He and Chuck Connors remained life-long friends. Crawford was a huge baseball fan as a kid, and when he found out Connors had played professional baseball (including a brief stint with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Chicago Cubs in 1949 and 1951), he became a more star-struck by Connors about that over his acting chops.

I watched that show religiously when I was a kid and will catch a few episodes even today when they come on TV in syndication.

Lucas was a badass with that rifle he had and would have to shoot someone on a weekly basis as he was always being called out by someone.

Crawford was 7 years older than me and I would watch "The Rifleman" and imagine myself living back in the west in that time period, riding horses, working on a ranch and having a cool dad like Lucas.

RIP Johnny

I was so jealous of Johnny Crawford and Billy Mumy. I had great parents, but to have the fastest rifle in the west as your dad, or to visit alien planets with your family, that looked amazing.

It was always a treat to see Crawford pop up later in his career, on Hawaii Five-O and shows like that.
