Roger Ebert: At his best, Nicolas Cage is on the level of De Niro, Pacino and Nicholson

Saw it on Reddit first and thought it was interesting how highly regarded Cage is by a renowned movie critic like Roger Ebert.

quote:

There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He's daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively. Recall the opening scenes in "Leaving Las Vegas." See him in Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead." Think of the title character in "The Weather Man." Watch him melting down in "Adaptation." And then remember that he can also do a parachuting Elvis impersonator ("Honeymoon in Vegas"), a wild rock 'n' roller ("Wild at Heart"), a lovesick one-handed baker ("Moonstruck"), a straight-arrow Secret Service agent ("Guarding Tess") and on and on.

He always seems so earnest. However improbable his character, he never winks at the audience. He is committed to the character with every atom and plays him as if he were him. His success in making Charlie Kaufman a neurotic mess and Donald Kaufman a carefree success story, in the same movie, comes largely from this gift. There are slight cosmetic differences between the two: Charlie usually needs a shave, Donald has a little more hair. But the real reason we can tell the twins apart, even when they're in the same trick shot, comes from within: Cage can tell them apart. He is always Charlie when he plays Charlie, always Donald when he plays Donald. Look and see.

"At his best" just wasn't very often, a lot was due to movie choices

I know it's not a popular opinion on here, but his performance in Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans is one of my favorite roles of all time.

Nicholas Cage is a really good actor. I think his reputation takes a hit because, at least for a while, it seemed like he didn’t turn any role down, no matter the script. But as far as on screen entertainment goes, I can’t say that Cage has ever bored me.

I’ve always thought Cage is a fine actor. Some of his movies aren’t good but it’s not his acting skill that sinks them.

Ebert also gave The Happening 3 stars.

Which I always agreed with.

I was hoping no one would post a reminder of that ugly spectacle. Community Seasons 5 and 6 sucked balls.

He’s not wrong. He’s been phenomenal in certain roles. Adaptation is my all time favorite cage movie. It’s excellent. The weather man is another under-appreciated movie. It’s great and he’s great in it.

Tarantino thinks very highly of him too. Made a comment about how he doesn’t give a frick about what the role is, he takes it and gives it his best

Agreed, he was phenomenal in leaving Las Vegas and was even better in adaptation.

Elbert didn’t even mention two of my favorites—Raising Arizona and Peggy Sue Got Married. Cage certainly has had moments of genius.

Cage basically created his own style of acting

shite on him for some of the paycheck roles he's taken, but the guy is entertaining as hell

Cage could be in consideration as a goat at his best

I'll never forget the time I mistakenly rented Leaving Las Vegas instead of Honeymoon in Vegas for a date night. I think Elizabeth Shue was crouching in the shower when my girl decided she had had enough and turned the TV off.

A while ago Baloo made a good point on here...

Nicolas Cage is like a good director litmus test.

If the director knows how to wield Cage, then the effort is honed and the overall performance is fantastic.

If they do not and Cage goes 100% like usual, it just seems unguided.
