Neve Campbell was never supposed to be Sidney Prescott, as that role was originally cast by Drew Barrymore. However, at Barrymore's suggestion, the producers re-cast her in the role of Casey Becker - the opening kill of the movie. The studio heads were already getting cold feet on production when this move was made, but they temporarily shut down production after seeing the cut of Barrymore's death scene mere days into filming.

quote:

Skeet Ulrich, who starred in 1996's original Scream along with Matthew Lillard and Neve Campbell, among others, said during a Friday, Feb. 7 panel about the franchise at MegaCon 2025 in Orlando that the film's studio Miramax nearly shut down filming after executives saw that iconic opening scene.

"I don't know if you know, but we started off shooting the sequence with Drew Barrymore in the beginning of the movie and they finished that sequence and Miramax stopped production," Ulrich, now 55, said during the panel. "They were like, ‘We don't wanna make this movie anymore. We don't know what it is.’ "

Scream famously opens with Barrymore's character Casey Becker being tormented over the phone, lured from her home and brutally murdered by masked killers, who turns out to be Ulrich's character Billy Loomis and Lillard's Stu Macher.

All time opener

I remember seeing it in theaters as a teen, Drew getting killed in the beginning was a shock, she was on all of the promotional posters and marketing then boom, lasted one scene

Yep. Miramax loved the script by Kevin Williamson but they were only going to front the money for the production if the filmmakers landed a "big" name to play the lead role of Sidney Prescott. Slashers had been doing poorly at the box office lately and they wanted a bankable star to front the film in the hopes of turning a profit. Barrymore was a known commodity when she was cast. However, after reading the script, she decided that she wanted to play the much smaller role of Casey Becker. She believed that dying in the opening 10 minutes of the movie would give the audience the sense that no one was safe.

Despite knowing this, Miramax made sure Drew Barrymore was front in center in all of the marketing leading up to the film's release.

Watched it at the old $1 cinema in Monroe on a Saturday night. Full theatre and me and my friend were the lone white people. I had this girl just about jump in my lap 3-4 times with all the suspense/jump out scenes. It was one of the best movie experiences I’ve ever had.

This is a pretty good documentary about Scream. Kevin Williamson was watching news coverage of Danny Rolling, The Gainesville Ripper when he wrote the screenplay.

It truly was genius. I saw it on Christmas night, 1996 right when Tinseltown first opened. The theater was stunned.

I was a senior in high school when it came out.

They absolutely nailed that demographic. We went in groups, and probably watched it 5 or 6 times.

Hard to believe it’s been 30 years since the last great slasher flick.

Scream was the first and second movie I ever saw at Tinseltown. Man that was such an awesome theater when it first opened.

I assume Drew regrets it because she had 5 more paychecks coming....

But the decision made the movie, as it was jarring at the time.....when you walked in thinking she was the lead.
