re: Shane Gillis Has The Opportunity To Do The Second Funniest Thing Ever

I wonder if they've ever asked Doug Stanhope to host? That guy is what all the other, younger comics, including Gillis, aspire to be, but without actually earning it. He's made himself uncancellable. He produces his own podcast, pretty much books his own shows, and paid cash for a house and land in the desert on the AZ/MX border. He appears to owe nothing and is beholden to no one, yet packs every venue he books.
I mean, Doug has a bit about trying to find a black guy in the audience to let him suck his dick and take a picture of it so he could carry it around in his wallet as a way to be able to make any joke about race or gay folks he wanted. I'd watch a Stanhope-hosted SNL show. They wouldn't dare, though.

I have no idea. I have never really gotten into Stanhope's comedy

I am certain that last night was the last time that I make a point to watch it live. There is nothing about that show that is aimed towards keeping me as a viewer.

I think you both are overestimating his saturation to the wider audience. He has been the new "It" comedian for the last year, but only with the stand-up and Rogan crowd.
& you may be underestimating just how wide of an audience he is reaching through podcasts sketch shows Netflix & stand-up in general
He has some coin coming in

He was never going to be a great fit for SNL as host or as a member.
He's fantastic at what he does, but what he does isn't a great fit for SNL. I would think that most people would see that his taped bits for SNL were much, much better than his live bits. He'd have had a chance of thriving there if SNL was in one of their pre-produced bits in each segment seasons (the non Lorne years).
A lot of us thought that SNL had missed out big by firing him, but I doubt he was going to be the next Will Ferrell, or even the next Pete Davidson. Getting fired was possibly the best thing to happen to his career. It gave him cachet with the people who would become his base audience.

Or the joke that got the biggest laugh, where he imagined his niece with Down syndrome being insulted by a white kid at school and then a group of "three Black kids come flying out of nowhere and just start whaling on that cracker." (Why exactly would they do that? And why does race matter here? I know – I'm overthinking. But it just felt like a lazy excuse to give the crowd a joke about a slur-slinging white person getting some comeuppance.)
The person who’s wrote that touches themselves to Hannah Gadsby YouTube clips.

I think you're projecting a bit here. Not everyone is an extremist.
Why would they show up knowing he's front and center every sketch if they hate him??

Wrong on pretty much all accounts

Given the fact that pretty much every comedian who's somebody thinks Shane is hilarious is enough to deduce that he is objectively hilarious. If you don't find him the least bit funny, you might have a very basic sense of humor.

Because he said his sister adopted three black children and maybe they would want to defend their sister with Down syndrome? Maybe I’m misremembering his monologue but I don’t think that bit was hard to understand.
It’s okay to say that you didn’t find him funny and move on.

quote:That was my point. Gillis wouldn't have been the next Will Ferrell (talented in the role and deserving praise) or a Pete Davidson (limited talent who somehow worked it into tons of praise, film work, and A list girlfriends). His main shot on the show would've been as the Trump impressionist, which might've kept James Austin Johnson from joining the cast two years later.quote:think you are giving Pete Davidson way too much credit here. Ive never watched a single episode of Rogan (nor any podcast thingy really)
Gillis is the most normal funny dude out right now.
Every person i've ever discussed him with thinks so too. His delivery is more genuine/realistic than most comics can pull off these days, and he does it without much shock value. He makes fun of politics in general, and doesnt really have a side.
