No. He just enjoyed making racists and homophobes uncomfortable.

Hell no, but he wasn't homophobic like the country boys were. I experienced a similar situation when I moved from a very cool town in Mississippi (Kosciusko) to a completely redneck town in North Louisiana (Farmerville) in 1974.
The guys there were still wearing the Wranglers and Tony Lama's their daddies wore. I was the only kid with long hair, bell bottoms, bell sleeved shirts and posters all over the walls in my room.
That movie is very much like where I spent my sophomore, junior & senior years. I turned many a kid on to ZZ Top, Zeplin, Pink Floyd and other great music. I was the only white guy that dated black girls. After I did it only two white girls went out with me. One of them only did it on the side. The other one had moved there from somewhere else too.
Edited to add:
A number of people in Farmerville thought my two best friends and I were gay. We drove to Monroe or Ruston to go out instead of sitting at Herbert Green's Gulf station drinking beer with the boys.
