So I was noticing last night when watching this that Caparzo at first is shot trying to help the kid, then passes the letter to his Dad to Wade. Wade re-writes it then gets shot while taking the machine gun nest. Capt. Miller then takes the letter after that and gets merked at the end at the bridge. Rieben then hesitates or looks lost when he is deciding to take the letter from Miller after the reinforcements arrive. Are we to assume that Rieben goes on and dies as well with the successive death of letter carriers? Is his hesitation based on that feeling? I never noticed this in the 100 times I've seen this movie before.

Damn, never noticed that. I figured that they were handing over their own death letters.

i guess it goes with the "taking up the mantle for your brothers" motif, but it just seemed too odd to me that every other person to carry that letter was dead to that point.

What you say may be true, but I always figured every soldier had his own personal farewell letter in his shirt pocket. E.g., I assumed Miller took Wade's letter from Wade's pocket (rather than Caparzo's letter from Wade's pocket).

yea i had thought about that but it made no sense in that Reiben would have been carrying 3 letters, not just the one he pulled out of Miller's jacket.

It was Caprazo's letter that Rieben pulled out of Miller's jacket at the end. Wade took it off of Caparzo's body because Mellish refused to take it. Wade could be seen re-writing the letter in the church that night as his comrades talked about life before the war. When Wade died in the assault on the German machine gun nest a day or two later, the first thing Miller does is take the letter off of Wade. It couldn't be any other letter than the one Wade had been re-writing because Wade never mentions a letter he had written to be sent back home and there was no way to send the Caparzo letter home because Miller and his squad were deep behind German lines during all of this.

I would say perhaps, but they never really meet up to a safe rally point to send mail off.

I thought it was fairly obvious that they were passing along Caparzo's letter to his father.

I just re-watched the scene on YouTube and it does indeed appear that Burns' character debates pocketing the letter from Hanks upon his realizing that the former bearers all were KIA. When originally watching we were all likely attributing Burns' actions as an emotional response to Hanks' death. But it does indeed appear he's hesitating to pocket the letter given its fateful journey to him. Pretty cool.

Can you repost the link? I can't get the entire final scene in its entirety.

its crazy when you watch something that many times and pick up on something like that. I wonder if there are any hidden superstitions among vets about that kind of thing.
