When an IP can gracefully balance on the line between parody, light adventure and serious science fiction without falling off, you truly have something magical.

This was still "real" Star Trek. They literally saved the whales in this film. This was a fish out of water and cetaceans in a spaceship story.

You can't go home again, but they did go home.

Brilliant end to the greatest science fiction trilogy in all of film history.

(Come at me, bros.)

I’m on the side that all of the first 6 TOS movies are immensely rewatcable.

I think in recent year the re-evaluation of TMP has started to garner the respect it deserves.

V is a mess, but it’s an interesting mess. “What does God need with a starship?” The only thing that really “ruins” it is that the Enterprise-A has 78 decks at one point, and Kirk strangely goes to being very chill around the Klingons to being somewhat genocidal when Praxis exploded in VI.

Star Trek IV

I get it, the series of events started in Wrath of Khan until IV. Got it. But was it really a trilogy? More of a continuation. And cleverly done.

My only tiny criticism is how this mirrored TMP story, replacing the V'ger with the Probe. But besides that, it was peak Star Trek.

And how unsatisfying was that we didn't know anything else about the Probe. It just waltzes into the solar system, nearly ends humanity, chats up a couple of whales and then goes on its merry way.

Well, the probe can break down ships and wreck Earth’s biosphere. I’m sure they were happy to see it gone without poking the bear and making it angry again.

V was a rush job. With the writer's strike of 1988, Shatter needing some help with the story, and not having the right company for special effects, they should have delayed the release until late 1989 or Summer 1990 to get everything ironed out.

Which reminds me, what was the fallout of joining with V'ger? Didn't we get ANY of that data? Seems it could have been super helpful.

*I don't have time to dive into the fan theories of 40+ yr old movie I've not seen in a very long time.

I’ve always heard it referred to as the “Spock” trilogy.

. That’s a legit criticism

V was a casualty of IV. Shatner’s contract stated that he would receive any perks or payments that were added to Nimoy’s agreement. So when Nimoy got to direct IV, they had to give V to Shatner.

Looking at how Picard is bringing back a lot of old TNG references I always wonder why no one does the same for TOS.

The doomsday machine, the whale probe, the guardian, V’ger. Lot of potentially great plot lines these new Star Trek series could get into. I only like Lower Decks though.

The idea of playing back a recording of an old whale seemed at least worthy of a try. But no, we’ll go back in time and kidnap a real one instead.

I liked that, reminiscent of rendezvous with Rama. It’s a way of saying that there are things and forces a lot bigger in the universe than even starfleet.

To be fair, trying to fool an entity powerful enough to destroy the entire planet should probably only be a last resort.

Still laugh when McCoy cures that lady's kidney failure.
