Several people volunteered, and downloaded the raw scans of a few reels in November 2018, but six months later, nobody had actually done more than clean up a few hundred frames. In case you’re wondering, The Empire Strikes Back has about 179,750 frames, so cleaning 300 frames isn’t as helpful as it might sound. 300 frames amounts to about 12 seconds of the movie.

Within a few months of scanning that print, we were able to obtain a scan of another 70mm print of ESB (and Jedi!) and this other 70mm Empire print is a blow up of the 35mm version. (The 70mm 6 track magnetic sound from this print is included with 4K80.) It’s very clean, and has only 4 frames missing, so perhaps THAT one could become the backbone of 4K80 v2.0, but only if we can fix the colors. Paging Nate D…
Either way, it’s all very exciting stuff, so we’re certainly not about to hang up the mouse and consider our work here to be done.
To date, we have scans of eight 35mm, four 16mm, and two 8mm theatrical prints of Star Wars, four 35mm, one 16mm, one 8mm, and two 70mm prints of Empire, and at least five 35mm prints and one 70mm print of Return of the Jedi (though the latter had really bad Vinegar Syndrome so I’m not sure all of it will be useable).
We have also scans of three 35mm Special Edition prints of Star Wars, two Special Edition prints of The Empire Strikes Back and two Return of the Jedi SE prints – which includes a complete SE trilogy set in German.

They are creating 4k versions of the original film stock.
You can already get 1080p quality versions online.

Etsy
Apparently, they have 4k versions now.

autists; unsatified with the quality of the shitty movies provided on BD and streaming searched the world for 15 years looking for original 35 and 70mm film prints.
over the course of that time period, they have meticulously and in ways only autists can work, repaired, spliced, scanned, used MILLIONS OF DOLLARS of high end film equipment and an army of volunteers to provide 4K versions of the original trilogy that recreate the way it felt to walk into a theater and see these movies for the first time.
its on ongoing effort; hence the v1.4, etc. after the movie titles

so these are 4k renderings of the original theatrical release? None of the edits that were made in the 90's?
A re-master of the original release? I had heard that Lucas had the masters locked down tight so if im seeing this right, these guys took copies of the OG release and re-mastered it. Obviously a painstaking process.

those are not remotely as curated as the 4K projects. i'm not going to debate this nonsense with you because you're never wrong but the 4K project is a billion times better than what was released as 'despecialized' and because its an on-going project, it will continue to get better.
TL;DR
4K project is not the same as despecialized; its a much higher quality effort despite slo attempting to say they're the same thing. 4K versions were posted to the webz earlier this year and available for downloading if you know the right places.

I am confused...who is doing this? Are they just making posters like it is a theatrical release but it is just some sort of unofficial download?

I don't think Slo was saying there were the same thing, just the same sort of idea.
The original, unaltered versions of the movies that we saw in the theaters brought up to today's standards by whatever means are available to both obtain the original material and encode it to the highest quality they can.
Which is exactly what they both are.

The despecalized versions were mostly taken from the 2011 blurays. All the stuff George added was removed. It was then upscaled to 4K. It's more of a recreation of the original theater experience.
The 4K77 project is a 4K scan of an original 35mm print. This version is the original theater experience.

Large groups of people have worked on a few different fan edits of the original trilogy. Trying to restore the movies to their original versions for other fans. They are all unofficial releases, downloading them is the easiest way to get them but there are some discs being sold, if you can find them.

its about recreating that original experience as close as possible using modern equipment and reels of film donated/found by people all over the planet.
in some cases, they are going through frame by frame and touching things up.
they are splicing together film from various sources, always with an eye to improving the quality.

Correct
Also, please note, in response to a request

they're not.
i pointed out they are 2 different things but of course, you are going to act like you never meant to imply the 1080p despecialized ebay crap you posted is the same thing as the 4K project i'm talking about.
