It wasn’t about the art or interest in telling a good story… but just about the money.

No kidding. And it showed.

After trashing the CG in his own movie , and now this, it’s safe to say he’s not coming back to Marvel. .

I got that very feeling in Thor: Ragnarok - a film this board unequivocally loved when it was released. I myself did not like it because it absolutely saw a massive shift in Thor's character from his first three or four appearances in the MCU. Kenneth Branagh and Joss Whedon at least understood who Thor was. Taika Waititi turned him into a bumbling comic relief character.

Incorrect. Thor was always a goofy fish out of water type in the comics. Ragnarok was more true to the spirit of the character. Take this strip for example:

Yeah. And we got scenes like that in the original Thor:

I need sustenance

Another!

I need a horse!

No forced humor. It all felt organic and true to his character.

Taika Waititi took it way too far with some of the shite he did in Ragnarok. Such as the very first scene where he absolutely emasculates the being that will eventually destroy Thor's world:

Thor on a chain

He would not have been able to pull off a scene like this:

YouTube

He would have tried to make it awkwardly funny, no emotion whatsoever.

Ragnarok's problem was that it tried so damn hard to be Guardians of the Galaxy-funny that it went way overboard and was basically silly. I liked Ragnarok okay, but it was super overrated IMO. I actually have only seen the first and third Thor movies. I just don't care for his movies. I like him in the ensemble movies though.

I got DVed when I've repeatedly stated Ragnarok was a good movie while, at the same time, a bad Thor movie. Completely missed the character.

Yes. A fish out of water. His overly formal, anachronistic language in a modern setting was the humor. He wasn't just another glib RDJ Tony Stark rip-off dropping witty one-liners like he was in an 80s buddy action movie. Not was he a whimpering little pussy shrinking like a middle school girl because he had some Taser apparatus attached to his neck*. It was so obvious that Marvel saw the positive response RDJ got (combined with the criticism Thor received in his first two movies) and decided to turn the character into a slick-talking jokester .

*BTW, you saw the directions the MCU was headed in this movie. The literal God of Thunder - the most powerful entity in the Asgardian world - easily subdued by a third-rate female Asgardian demo-god. Not to mention, the actress who played her looked nothing like a Norse character and had all the acting range of a cigar store Indian. We should have been prepared for the schlock to come.

That's basically every Marvel movie now, Bathos worked well for them, so they carbon copied that to every movie they had. Nothing has real drama and emotion behind it, its all comedy all the time. It's bleeding over to other Disney properties as well. Nothing can be serious anymore for them.

The way Marvel has treated Thor is disgraceful. They completely pussified him, turning him into nothing more than punchline or a comic relief fatso. It's insulting to the character and Thor fans.

I am a big Thor fan. My first comics were an old Thor run my dad had in a box. I have read a ton of them since. I enjoyed all 4 Thor movies

Thor at its best is a high fantasy set in space, but I think Marvel saw Dark World and really shrank away from that.

I don’t think general audiences connected with Dark World Thor.

RT Scores Dark World is the lowest at 67% Audiende then Thor and L&T are ties at 76% and Ragnorak is tops at 87%.

I also think there is an issue with how Thor fits into the Avengers. Not everyone can be the serious one.

I think L&T was actually a pretty good movie. I know the board hates it because there is a rock alien whose entire race is male that reproduces by putting his hand in lava and a bi valerie, but it’s got a great villain and at its heart is an action Rom Com.

I've been reading the MCU book that came out this year and decided to start watching the movies from the beginning. Just watched the original Thor a couple of weeks ago and I enjoyed it a lot more than I initially did. It's definitely better than the previous two IMO

Directors making special effects teams undergo a million redos is why effects suffer more and more.

So he’s basically mocking them for making the shite changes he insisted on.

Must've been the set designers who knew enough about Thor to throw in some Kirbyesque imagery.

He’s on Smartless pod this week and said he knew nothing of comics but did tons of research. I don’t believe he was given the chance to direct and didn’t do 1 bit of research

Which is what we saw in Thor & Dark World.

But here’s the kicker. Tailka admits to have picked up ONE Thor comic. He had no knowledge of the source material. Even gloated “I’ll wreck your mythos in a minute baby!”.

It was a scam, a grift in his part. He’s outright saying this. Listen to him.

While this is a fair sentiment, what do you think the point his of him saying it? What's the benefit? Was he looked down on in his more artistic community since he had directed a Marvel movie and needed to restore his street cred?

Can't figure out the motive.

I’ve never been a comic reader but have always enjoyed Hemsworth and his portrayal on the character.

I think they tried to complete overcompensate after Dark World with Ragnorak, but it didn’t have to be that way. Dark World was arse, but they went to the complete opposite end of the spectrum in Ragnorak.

I liked Ragnorak, but man what a tonal shift for the character. I think Hemsworth can be funny but it was too much. My real problem was Endgame. Fat Thor just being a joke and getting worked over by Thanos pissed me off. If there’s an Avenger who can actually put the hurting on Thanos besides Captain Marvel, it’s Thor.

Ignoring emasculated Hulk, that’s another topic.

Instead he got his fricking arse kicked, the logic being he was fat and out of shape but they should’ve never made him fat and out of shape to begin with. They could’ve gone another route with how he handled previous events and losing his loved ones

Damn, for a minute there I thought this would be the first time I actually agreed with you.

But nope. You had to go too far.

Oh well. At least you're consistent.

I think Ragnorok was more in line with the general MCU tone than Dark World. And I liked Dark World.

There are a lot of people who think everything needs to be dark and gritty.
