The thing that has always distinguished TV storytelling from its big-screen counterpart is the existence of individual episodes. We consume our series — even the ones that we binge — in distinct chunks, and the medium is at its best when it embraces this. The joy of watching an ongoing series comes as much from the separate steps on the journey as it does from the destination, if not more. Few pop-culture experiences are more satisfying than when your favorite show knocks it out of the park with a single chapter, whether it’s an episode that wildly deviates from the series’ norm, or just an incredibly well-executed version of the familiar formula.

For this Rolling Stone list of the 100 greatest episodes of all time, we looked at both the peak installments of classic series, as well as examples of lesser shows that managed to briefly punch way above their weight class. We have episodes from the Fifties all the way through this year. We stuck with narrative dramas and comedies only — so, no news, no reality TV, no sketch comedy, talk shows, etc. In a few cases, there are two-part episodes, but we mostly picked solo entries. And while it’s largely made up of American shows (as watched by our American staff), a handful of international entries made the final cut.

10. Atlanta, “Teddy Perkins” (Season 2, Episode 6)

9. The Shield, “Family Meeting” (Season 7, Episode 13)

8. Roots, “Part II”

7. Cheers, “Showdown, Part 2” (Season 1, Episode 22)

6. Mad Men, “The Suitcase” (Season 4, Episode 7)

5. Seinfeld, “The Contest” (Season 4, Episode 10)

4. The Sopranos, “College” (Season 1, Episode 5)

3. The Leftovers, “International Assassin” (Season 2, Episode 8)

2. The Simpsons, “Last Exit to Springfield” (Season 4, Episode 17)

1. Breaking Bad, “Ozymandias” (Season 5, Episode 14)

M*A*S*H @ 23 seems pretty low. That one that sticks out to me bigly because of the time and I guess my age.

Buffy - The Body @ 22 seems about right.

I mean, it's basically literally impossible to pick one, but...why this one?

Love seeing this get some love. Just a perfect episode of TV and still not even my favorite episode of The Leftovers. The show is just that good.

Was worried Freaks and Geeks wouldn't make the list but Disco's and Dragons was at 37.

I would rearrange a lot of them and change certain episodes but honestly not that bad of a list.

Eh. I disagree. While this episode was a wild zag and very intense and creepy .. it’s not the tenth best episode of tv

The highest ranked episode of Curb is "Mister Softee" (at #21); while I love that episode and think it is absolutely brilliant, it isn't even the best episode in that season. In my opinion, that title belongs to "The Palestinian Chicken," although there are so many to choose from.

Upon further review list is complete shite. The one episode of GOT is from Season fricking 8 and the one episode from Fargo is from last season. List shits the bed on a lot of more modern shows.

The poll is retarded because it only allows for one episode of one show when there are multiple Top 100 greatest episodes of a single show. Like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, LOST, The Wire, and The Sopranos should probably have like five entries a piece on a Top 100 Episodes of all time list. There really should be around 30-40 series total on a Top 100 episodes list.

And the best episode of Game of Thrones was the Season 8 episode “A Knight of Seven Kingdoms?” Get the frick out of here with that bullshite. I think most Game of Thrones fans would agree that in no specific order these were the best episodes:

Baelor
Blackwater
The Rains of Castamere
Battle of the Bastards
The Winds of Winter

HMs
Hardhome
The Lion and the Rose
The Mountain and the Viper
The Door

The fact that this does not have a single episode of Rick & Morty on it completely invalidates it. It's not worthy of discussion.

This is not a serious article.

List is shite.

Yeah I don’t understand the ranking if you can only choose one episode from each show. I guess they wanted to give more attention to other shows but if that was the point write a different article. The list is invalidated before you even begin reading.
