The Beastmaster (1982) Appreciation Thread

It's been a few years since I watched this, so I watched it over the last several days. Man, it's such an awesome movie. I remember growing up watching this all the time, as it used to come on one of the movie channels (I think HBO maybe?) and TBS constantly. It's just completely awesome B-movie level cheesiness. But it's actually good though and there is a lot more going on plot-wise than I remember.
Marc Singer as Dar is a great leading man, even if we have to watchi him run around in a leather loin cloth the whole time. Tanya Roberts as Kiri is great as the love interest, and she's nice to look at but she's also kind of a badass as well...I forgot how much arse she kicked in the movie. Maax is a great villain, as is the Jun horde (and its badass looking leader). Good ole John Amos as Seth is a comparable badass. The creepy witches, the red priests, the death hunters, black tigers, eagles, the creepy flying creatures that drain bodies dry and leave the bones, ferrets, tar pit explosions, temples with secret doors, fire sacrifices, etc.
The cinematography is solid, the music is solid. Hell, even the acting by the animals is solid. It's one of my favorites and I honestly think it's one of the best movies of the 80s. It's pretty underrated IMO.
My 17 year old stepdaughter walked in last night and was like what the hell are you watching, and I tried to briefly explain it to her. And the more I tried to explain, the more ridiculous it sounded. I was like "Okay, so there's this evil priest and he runs with the Jun, and he has evil witches and one of them told him that he would die at the hand of King Zed's unborn son. So he sends his witches and they go try to kill the son, but instead of killing the mom they do witch shite and transport the baby from the mother to a cow. So he's born to a cow, which (I assume) is what leads him to be connected with animals and able to speak to them and see through their eyes. But they don't end up killing him, and he's rescued and raised by this farmer and doesn't know his true heritage. So kinda like Superman. Then the farm community is wiped out by the Jun horde, and Dar travels back to where he was originally from and that's just the first ten or so minutes...you know what, you wouldn't like it."
Anyway, there have been several threads over the years about this movie, and I've preached my love for it on this board over and over. But since I just watched it again, I figured we could discuss its awesomeness (or terribleness if you hated it I guess). Any fans of this one?
And here's a pic of Tanya Roberts, for your time.

As a young boy of the 80s, it was pure awesomeness. Swords, sorcery, animals, hot women, adventure, kings, battles, mysterious dangerous creatures, everything you could want.
Star Wars, Beastmaster, Clash Of The Titans, Time Bandits, I loved them all. Just great imaginative adventure movies.
I have a feeling these guys would be cgi today and would lose their presence because of such.
Kiri made me feel funny in a certain way down there.

Yeah, it also came on cable TV all the time as well. I'm not sure how old I was when I realized that the TV version was edited and that there was nudity in it, but I'm sure that was a glorious day for kid me.

Exactly. It's FULL of awesome shite. And I never thought about until I was an adult, but the plot is very solid and tight for the most part. I never realized as a kid why the flying creatures showed up at the end of the movie to save them from the Jun, but it was because the eagle went and got them to help. Did Dar send him to do that, or did he do it on his own?

Agreed. They were terrifying to me as a kid (but in a kinda cool way). And those death guards scared the crap out of me too. I used to always be afraid one of those green glowing leeches would somehow get into my ears when I was asleep.

ETA: I also forgot how awesome it was when Dar hits on Kiri. Forgot he played it as "I'll save you from this dangerous tiger" to try to look like a pimp.

I haven't watched this in a long time. Might need to find a physical copy of it to add to the collection.
Much like Conan, this was like a Frank Frezzetta painting come to life.

That’s a good question regarding the flying creatures.
I know they respected Dar once he commanded his eagle to come to him. They stood down then gave him this pendant like thing. I think Dar probably sent the eagle to get their help. They knew it was Dar’s eagle from previous encounter, observed it’s screeching (may have even understood on some level) then followed the eagle back.

Who here is man enough to admit they cried when that one weasel sacrificed himself to save Dar? I think their names were something like Kodos and Lang or Kodo and Frodo or something like that.
Speaking of LOTR, the eagle people in Beastmaster served the same dues ex machine role as the Eagles in LOTR. Those guys are definitely good friends to have.

Agreed!
Conan the Barbarian is the GOAT sword and sorcery movie, but Beast Master is a close second.
Singer is ripped and looks like he knows his way around a sword. Speaking of which, his sword is a fresh look, a hybrid of a katana and a scimitar. It's a little long to be considered a falchion I think.
Tanya Roberts was a dime back then, everything a teen 80's kid fantasized over.
The villains were great, Rip Torn really chewed through his lines, but in a cheesy awesome way.
Too bad the sequel and the series didn't hold up.

HA HA. You fool! It's obviously a Harris' Hawk, not any sort of eagle.
Know your raptors, bro.

This and If You Could See What I Hear ( great movie also starring Marc Singer) seemed like they were always on HBO when I was kid.

True Story Time:
For my 12th birthday, I got my dad to take me and three friends to see Beastmaster at the theater. Had no idea about the nudity scene, and was instantly a legend in junior high for having pulled that off.
A year later, one of my buddies turning 13 decided to have a movie party and talked his dad into taking us all to see...
Risky Business
To this day we still joke about how fast Beastmaster fell after that move...

Man those witches bodies were banging! Unfortunately, they had a face of a 123 year old grandma.

I do own it on DVD, but it's on Prime Video (that's how I watched it).
