The "Bird is the Word" scene from Full Metal Jacket

Was randomly thinking about how much I enjoy that whole sequence, especially the tracking shot that follows the cameramen filming the line of Marines. Also, towards the end where the dialogue about Custer goes down the line. An odd song choice by Kubrick but it works so damn well.

I actually like the very next sequence.

People always say the boot camp is the best part of the movie but I disagree. Animal Mother makes the movie.

It just seems like two totally different movies. I don't think I've ever even been able to finish the movie once they get out of basic. For some reason I just lose interest and don't want to watch it anymore. Although to be fair, it's been a long time since I watched the movie, so maybe it'd be different now.

One of my favorite scenes from any movie comes from when the camera is shooting from the dead marines point of view and they are discussing the meaning of his death.
"Freedom is just a word, and if I am going to die for a word, then that word is going to be Poontang" Animal Mutha

Seems likely to have been at least part of the point. You can talk about killing all you want in boot camp, but the real world is the real deal.

Weird. The movie in its entirety is awesome.

Just watched this movie last week. Not a huge Vincent D'Onofrio fan but damn if he didn't play a great Gomer Pyle.

I know what you mean.
The ending of the bootcamp segment is so insanely intense and claustrophobic that it feels strange and slow once you get to the open-air scenes of Vietnam, where he's talking to whores.
Still, we both need to go back and finish the movie.
I can't blame not finishing it on being 15 anymore.

The "in country" part is good to me because of way the guys interact with each other. They are still calling each other names like kids (talking about sisters & mothers).
I like how some great lines are delivered by minor characters. The answer to, "How can you shoot women and children?" comes to mind. That gunner is in that one scene and has one of the most awesome morbid lines in the history of movies.

It is very realistic in that people do tend to act like that in dire situations. Not just in war but even in a situation where multiple people in a work place know their jobs are in jeopardy. No one wants to go out lightly. Hell, I've seen it when pay plans got changed. The big difference is, with them, screwing around can cost a life.
The nicknames alone make this movie great, all of it, not just the first half.

It's also great because it shows the intense urban fighting.
When most people think of Vietnam, they think of the jungle battles but in reality, some of the most intense fighting was in the urban centers like Hue City.

Like Animal and Eightball know the other has their back but Animal tells Eightball, "Hey junglebunny, thank God for the sickle cell huh?" Or some of his other opinions on blacks.
I like how Animal dogs everyone out but he's the one that is first to charge the sniper to go get Doc.

He actually says to him "all fricking @#$#s must fricking die". But then he refuses to leave 8 Ball out there.

is it die or hang? I might just have to watch this again. It's been a long time.

I have a print of the original Garrett 45 for "Surfin' Bird" == this is the B side which isn't a bad early 60's surf song:
King of the Surfers

Yea, he doesn't want to take his seconds either.
I always wonder what roles guys auditioned for with movies like this one. I would think anyone who read the script would want to be Joker, Animal, Eightball or at least Cowboy.
I doubt the guy that played Raptor Man wanted to be the naive new guy that was inspired by the officers speech to Joker about getting into the game. I doubt many guys would want to be Privite Snowball running around like a chicken with his head cut off while Eightball is getting to pull out a little Alabama blacksnake.
IMHO the biggest dick character in the movie was Joker & Raptor's boss. The meeting scene when he tells Raptor to get bush shots with morning dew is like a scene out of Good Morning Vietnam or Animal House.
Lots of good stuff in this movie.

This pretty much describes it for me. It's like the movie ends in basic and another movie starts.
