The Departed is such an incredible movie

I watched The Departed last night, after not having seen it for a long time. I was reminded of how incredible that movie is. One of Scorsese’s best movies, in my opinion.
The acting, writing, plot twists, music… everything is classic.
What do you like most about The Departed? For me, it was the performances. They could not have cast the roles any better. Jack Nicholson was completely convincing as the ruthless mob boss, Frank Costello. Leo DiCaprio and Matt Damon played their roles to perfection as well. I also thought the character of Mr. French, played by Ray Winstone, was particularly menacing.
Lastly, what is your favorite fan theory concerning the events that happened in the movie?

How funny and quotable it is. One of my favorites

Marky Mark cracks my shite up too.

It is right up until the end, and then it sucks badly.
The ending ruined it for me. I'd rate it as a "really good" movie due to the ending, whereas had they stuck the landing better, it would've been one of the best of the decade for me.
I get that some people like the ending, but to me it just felt like such a copout. Almost like "I have no idea how to end this so let's just kill everybody in about three minutes."
I'm not sure what this alludes to.

One of my favorite movie reviews of all time comes from an Ole Miss fan on this board:

I did not think that a movie could make me sick of watching people get shot in the head; that movie made me sick of watching people get shot in the head.

SPOILER ALERT
CocomoLSU, for example, why do you think Dingnam killed Sullivan at the end? Was it revenge for Queenan’s murder? Was Dingnam actually working for Costello the whole time? Did it have a lot to do with the fact that Costello was an FBI informant?

Loved the movie but thought it was one of Leo’s worst acting performances.
Like someone else said, the ending seemed rushed and just cashed in.

Were we given any hints that it would have been anything other than revenge for Queenan? I don't recall ever wondering if he had ties to Costello.

My dad and I went and saw this in theatre, I was 16 at the time and had no idea what it was, hadn’t seen a trailer or anything went in completely blind. Walked out blown away. It’s still a top 5 movie all time for me and is what turned me into such a massive Leo fan

Same for Alec Baldwin. For as much as I think he is a DB as a person, he's a damn good actor and often cracks me up. Particularly the scene at the driving range

revenge for Queenan and maybe for Leo to a lesser degree. anything else is purely made up based on nothing. might as well say that it's a fan theory that Queenan was secretly working for the Russians or that Costello was the ghost of a guy who had died in Colorado decades before.

Also to Frac the World that first GIF of Jack is from Anger Management with Adam Sandler not The Departed.

I can’t get off an elevator without thinking of this movie.

It’s probably the last major role Jack Nicholson ever does and he 100% reminds you why he’s was such a big movie star. He absolutely steals the show as Frank Costello.

That’s right,

Came up in the results and ran with it

I prefer the ending of Infernal Affairs which was basically the elevator scene plus some wrapping up loose ends of the story.
Affairs was also a much shorter film. Scorsese isn't passing up showing us Dignam/Wahlberg's hit on Colin/Damon. It gives Wahlberg a more significant role, and it feels satisfying to a degree when the bad guy gets his due.
Otherwise the message is more China Town than happyish ending.

I think Jack was more terrifying in this movie than he was in the Shining.
