The Legend of Vox Machina Season 1 thread (full season 1 out now)

Amazing that a homebrew game between a bunch of nerds became what it did.
Starts on Amazon Prime: January 28.
For those unfamiliar, Vox Machina is the name of the party in the first campaign of Critical Role. The animated show takes place before the actual show begins. (The group had already been playing their campaign for a year before the stream started)
I don't like that they wrote Orion Acaba's character out of the series, but I understand why they did.

what does this even mean? there's so much you aren't telling us

The original Critical Role group, which is where that all started, consisted of the following.
Players
Ashley Johnson - Pike (Gnome Cleric)
Marisha Rey - Keylith (Half-Elven Druid)
Travis Willingham - Grog (Goliath Barbarian)
Sam Riegel - Scanlan (Gnome Bard)
Taleisen Jaffe - Percy (Human Gunslinger)
Laura Bailey - Vexahlia (Half-Elf Ranger)
Liam O'Brien - Vaxildan (Half-Elf Rogue)
Orion Acaba - Tiberius (Dragonborn Sorcerer)
Dungeon Master - Matthew Mercer
25 episodes into the original stream, Acaba had a full meltdown and was kicked out of the group.
The voice actors are all voicing their characters in the animated series plus others because Matt can't exactly voice every non-player.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, here is the first episode: Campaign 1, Episode 1

Yeah, among the things that he has done or accused of doing:
Being abusive to his exes (I actually heard a call of him screaming at one)
Cheating during the game, both with altering dice rolls and giving his character more spells than he should actually have
Screaming at a fan for creating a shirt (not for resale) with his character on it (that Travis and Laura had to defuse)
Getting angry at the DM (Matt Mercer) anytime something bad happened to his character or something didn't go his way, including claiming Matt was trying to kill off everyone (TPK).
Drug abuse
At times very inappropriate comments to fellow players (the female cast) that at times makes them visibly uncomfortable, and at least once after a comment I believe I can see Travis Willingham (Laura Bailey's husband and pretty big dude) getting a bit pissed at him but trying to keep his cool (it is a live show after all)
So yeah, it's no surprise that after episode 27 he was gone (out of 115 total).
If you look at his involvement (27 episodes out of a combined 266 to date), that would be the equivalent of someone leaving Star Trek: TNG after one season and then everyone wondering if they were going to show up for the finale.
(If you're curious, the answer is no - no one gave a shite if Doctor Pulaski showed up for the finale).

266 is not a good metric for this.
The first campaign (Vox Machina) went 115 episodes. At the time of the initial stream, I think all the characters were either level 8 or level 10 and they had been playing for a year. 27 out of 115 is the correct metric. Also, during the Chroma Conclave portion of the campaign, the dead body of Tiberius was found so they addressed it.
The second campaign (Mighty Nein) went 141 episodes and started in 2018 with a 6-month hiatus in 2020 due to COVID and California's lockdown rules.
The third campaign (current one), which started in October, reaches episode 10 tonight and added Robbie Draymond as a main player.
There's actually been 275 episodes so far not including the one-shots.

Travis and Laura aren't the only couple on the show.
Matt and Marisha were dating, then engaged, then married over the course of the show's run. She is actually the senior EP of the show.
Ashley is engaged to Brian Foster, who runs the "discussion" shows.

Not when the animated series takes place BEFORE the original show.

Never said they were, just that I saw a visible reaction out of Travis from his comments.

I suppose that's fair, but at the same time I measuring the entire run of Critical Role, so if you've been following every episode, he would account for 10% of the shows you've listened to. If you had stopped with season 1, he'd account for 25% of the shows.

That's fair, but also would be:
A. Insanely awkward to include him now
B. Still would be a character inclusion of what would be considered, over the long term, a minor character in the overall story of Vox Machina.

Point taken. I'll end the subject of argument.
I'm looking forward to seeing Scanlan have to use original songs instead of the changing of the lyrics to actual songs to fit the game that Sam did in Campaign 1.
Fun fact: Vax and Vex are twins because Liam and Laura share the same birthday.

I legit did not know that.

I literally started watching their 3rd campaign a few days ago (first time watching any of them), after I saw a How To Drink episode based off of Critical Role.
I've gotta say, Marisha does it for me.

The way I see them:
Laura Bailey is cool and pretty
Ashley Johnson is cute and fun
Marisha Ray is sexy AF and seems like would be a blast

how do you guys keep up with their campaigns? I watched the 2nd one for awhile but 3 hours a week, every week starts to get difficult to keep up with.

Sam's flask has been a running gag for almost 6 years.
Last campaign, it was oversized because he was playing as a halfling who was turned into a goblin.
This campaign, it's shaped like a fuel can because he's playing basically a robot.

If you look in the comments section, someone usually posts timestamps with the highlights.
The episode with the final battle of campaign one went over 7 hours.

I listen to the podcasts - my commute is about 50 minutes each way so that works for 2-3 work days.

I'm still not sure what Marisha's character in campaign 3 is supposed to be. Is she undead?

She’s a Hollow One. A person who died but was brought back my unusual magics from a specific region. You no longer have your soul but you still maintain your sense of self.
So yes an undead, but not mindless (like zombies and skeletons) or intelligent yet driven by certain compulsions that make you evil (vampires, mummies, liches, etc).

Oh, so she's a "reborn"?
I wonder how her character being from Whitestone will come into play
IIRC, campaign 2 takes place 20 years after campaign 1. Not sure of the time jump after campaign 2, but Bertrand was in his 70s (he was mid-30s in the Pandemonium one shot)

I've wanted to start this as a podcast but get overwhelmed at the 2 plus hour run time and how many episodes there are. I did listen to the original Adventure Zone D&D podcast and really loved it.
Do you guys recommend just biting the bullet and starting critical role?
