I seem to have vastly different tastes in movies from most posters on this forum, but I'll continue to tout those movies I enjoy.
This was Nicolas Cage's first western. The script was somewhat predictable, but I felt Cage's performance as a gunfighter turned family man was decent. The performance by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, playing his 12-year-old daughter, was superb.
Rotten Tomatoes critics mostly panned this film, but the audiences were positive about it.

If only we could get Nicholas Cage verses Keanu Reaves in a Mexican Standoff.
I picture Cage as the over the top villain with Reaves as the reluctant protagonist.

I didn't mind it at all. I believe a poster on this board was involved in making the film

I get the low RT scores. I thought the film was slow and some of the dialogue was cringe (esp the sheriff’s). The part where Cage asks the girl to cry and she can’t was just… weird.
I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters at all. It’s predictability doesn’t necessarily hurt it, but it kept me from fully engaging. The script would have benefitted from a non-linear structure where we don’t know who Cage was in the past and why the villain is so obsessed with him.

It was okay but the script was pretty standard fare if I remember correctly and Cage seemed pretty subdued. The settled down ex killer that has to come out of retirement was done in Unforgiven and Cage seemed kind of wooden through the whole movie.

Thanks for the recommendation. I love westerns.
I’ll check it out. It’s on Hulu.

So weird. I just watched this last night after the game. I remember reading the thread from the producer of the movie and how he talked about using as much Louisiana resources as he could for things like post production.
All in all I found it entertaining. The actress playing his daughter was superb. I always appreciate how much Cage commits to any part he is in even if it’s a straight to video type movie. However I feel like he struggled a bit with this one. Maybe the genre was just too much out of his comfort zone. I still enjoyed his character and I thought the scene with the daughter where they were sitting by the campfire at night and he was sharing his past was his best scene. I really liked the sheriff. Seen him in some other stuff. Thought the main villain was miscast a bit. Something about the way he spoke just didn’t give off the vibe of being in that era.
If the producer is still around, can you reply back any other projects you have done we might could check out. I did think this movie was filmed extremely well. Set pieces and wardrobe and scenery were all on point. I would definitely be interested in checking out some more of your work and supporting a fellow Tiger.
