The Winds of War (1983) Television Miniseries

They seriously don't make them like this anymore. Epic network events with episodes as long as a full-length motion picture. The Winds of War is based on the novel by Herman Wouk of the same name which tells the story of the Henry family and the people in their lives during the Second World War. If you want a fictionalized account of World War II that covers all the major events, this and its sequel miniseries - War and Remembrance - are just for you.
Here is a link to the first episode of the miniseries for those who are interested:

The Winds of War and War and Remembrance are my two favorite books ever. I've read them both about 5 times each. As a set, they are one of the best works of historical fiction ever. If you haven't read the book I'd suggest reading it first, but the miniseries scripts are nearly taken word for word from the books, so there's a lot of symmetry there.
In terms of the miniseries, I think War and Remembrance is better due to the acting, sets and scope. Ali MacGraw and Jan-Michael Vincent are really bad as Natalie and Byron. MacGraw's acting is some of the worst I've ever seen. They were replaced in the W&R miniseries by Jane Seymour and Hart Bochner, who were much better.

Easily. Hart Bochner was actually in the running to play Byron in the The Winds of War but Dan Curtis (the series producer) believed him too young for the role at the time. Jane Seymour was absolutely brilliant as Ali MacGraw's replacement in War and Remembrance. And John Gielgud was a step up from John Houseman - who was way too frail for the role of Aaron in The Winds of War.

Screw the content - how about VO legend Ernie Anderson's work as ABC's promo guy in spots for those commercials?

Amen, can't believe I failed to mention him. He's incredible as Aaron.
War and Remembrance really is a who's who of actors who either hit it big later or who you remember from different bit or supporting roles (Bill Simmons "that guy" type). Jane Seymour, Sharon Stone a few years before Total Recall and Basic Instinct, John Rhys-Davies, Barry Bostwick, Ian McShane, E.G. Marshall (Clark's FIL in Christmas Vacation), G.D. Spradlin (crooked Senator in Godfather II), Michael Madsen, and Eddie Albert are just a few.

Didn't know Bostwick was notable enough to engender strong feelings one way or another.

I remember watching both series many years ago. Even as a kid, I thought the guy playing Hitler in the Winds of War was awful.

I can remember watching this as a kid with my parents and being upset about not having any real war scenes.

Had a friend who was in college in Mobile at the time of filming of Winds Of War. Ships scenes were done on the USS Alabama and he was picked as an extra. He said he got to be a navy officer and would strut around looking busy.
He and his friends were in the background and I asked him if he called Ropbert Mitchum, "Bob".
Said he never even got close enough.
