Thread Change: Let's Overanalyze Varsity Blues
Posted on 5/10/21 at 8:07 am
Posted on 5/10/21 at 8:07 am
ETA: This thread stated off just looking for an answer to the question posted below, but at this point, I believe it's time to fully convert this into an over analysis of Varsity Blues because most of pages 2-4 are that already. Enjoy.
My wife and I watched this on HBOMax this weekend for old times' sake.
First off, still an amazing 90s high school movie all around.
Enjoyed the ride.
But my question is this:
The last game was for the district title. They'd only lost one game the whole season and won district. So what about the playoffs? Mox says in his voiceover at the end of the movie that was the last time he ever played football.
But in a speech earlier in the movie Coach Kilmer said something along the lines of "if you don't get better you can forget about the district title and you can certainly forget about state"
So based off of their record and winning the district title, they would have had to have been seeded in the state playoffs.
But Mox says it was their last game of the season.
WTF? Did Mox just quit on the team and skip the playoffs?

They all did.

It certainly would’ve been in his bitch character to do that.

My guess is they had to forfeit the playoffs because they didn’t have an actual employed HC?
Idk it’s one of those movies that is worthy of its own Overthinking thread despite being awesome

I wonder if there's a Rewatchables episode on this. I'd enjoy the hell out of that

Not to rain on your parade here but this is like always the first thing that gets posted in some cracked/buzzfeed articles for “biggest movie plot holes ever” and shite like that
The bigger travesty IMO is how they shoot the final play of the game. They make it slow mo and crank up the foo fighters which is awesome, but they keep cutting back to the clock. Ball gets snapped, look back at the clock (7 seconds), pump fakes the ball, look back at clock (5 seconds), throws the ball for anticipation (3...2...1)..... CAUGHT! GAME WINNER!
But back it up a second, why the hell do they keep looking back at the clock? It’s not like basketball where the ball needs to be out of his hands to count, once the ball was snapped for that final play, the clock is complete irrelevant to the play, and in turn irrelevant to the drama element of this story

It's a flawed classic with a great sound track and enough of a story to keep me entertained.
Plus Ali Larder wearing nothing but whip cream and Amy Smart back when she was fiya.
And who can forget Tonie Perensky as Miss Davis?

I've obviously never read those articles. I hadn't seen it since high school, but I do recall having this same thought back then, but no LSU Movie/TV Message Board to discuss it on.

Yea this part was funny. I guess it's for people that don't understand football (which I think the movie was made by those people as well) to build up the drama.

As highly rated as Lance Harbor was, he had the shittiest throwing mechanics of a QB of his caliber I've ever seen.

But what about his scholarship to Florida State?

Honestly, the wtf nature of some of the directorial choices is kind of an endearing factor of the whole thing. Adds to that over the top element where you kind of wonder “did they do that on purpose knowing it was ridiculous?”
Like everyone in that HS is in their late 20s at least and apparently there’s a pretty decent looking local strip joint with a pinup girl health teacher moonlighting as a stripper in the middle of bum frick Texas where the local high school kids can go hang out.
It’s all absurd in the best way.

This
Everything was so over the top
On the rewatch, I thought the most ridiculous thing in the movie was the little brother with his various cults.
What a random fricking thing to include in there.

Yeah that always made me laugh.
Love this movie and it is still awesome. I caught a good bit of it last week actually. The clock at the end always makes me laugh, and I remember pointing that out when I saw it in theaters back in the day.
I never thought about that being their last game. I can't find the end scene clip online where Mox tells us about everyone, so I don't remember exactly what he says.
What I laugh at is how selfish and terrible of a teammate Wendell is. He's all mad about Kilmer not getting him TDs. Well, Wendell, maybe if you've run the ball all the way down the field, mixing it up and throwing it may be a decent strategy...especially if you've got a QB like Lance. Or even if it's legit that Kilmer doesn't want to give you TDs because you're black, don't get mad at Mox (or the other players) for that. Like he bitches at Mox and he's all like "You don't understand, bro...you white." But as soon as Mox says "I'll get you in the endzone, Wendell is like "Okay, we cool, Mox." So all you want is your TDs for your own personal recruitment nad you don't give a frick about anybody else? Got it.
And yeah, Mox is a piece of shite and a pretty terrible person.

ETA: And the strip club thing, I always just figured they were all 18. There used to be strip clubs that let you in at 18 back then. Now the drinking, who knows...maybe the legal age was 18 there? But at least there is a decent explanation as to why/how five HS kids could be in a strip club and nobody had any issues with it.

I think it was more of a way for the writers to show how important high school football was to the town, and how big of a celebrity status the stars of the team had. Like Tweeter stealing the cop car and not going to jail.
Friday Night Lights did the same thing with the QB being given the six pack of beer by the convenience store owner.

I thought the strip club was a few towns over... which is why the teacher was there so she would be less likely to be recognized.
