Timothy Olyphant was horrible on Deadwood but good on Justified.

Was he miscast as the sheriff in Deadwood or am I dead wrong? A constantly brooding and angry man in hat role that was miserable to watch. He somehow works on Justified by toning down the anger a bit.

I keep hearing this...

I want to check out Deadwood for him and John Hawkes. But is he really that bad?

Almost unwatchable in my opinion. I dreaded every scene with him in it. That being said i really like him on Justified and thoroughly enjoy the show.

Dead wrong. Bullock was angrier than Givens because Givens has a better sense of humor. The fact that he can play angry two different ways is a credit to the actor. You never see any "Bullock" in Givens.

Bullock was a full on rage machine, with the world on his shoulders, Givens takes it a lot better.

On deadwood, he was ok. Never watch justified. Deadwood was not a show you watch for him anyway. You watch it for Ian McShane.

My question would be, which one did you watch first?

The two characters are similiar but different as well.

If you watch Justified and go watch Deadwood after, you are going to see a lot of Raylan Givens but without the charm/humor. That's my opinions as to why you may not like the casting as much.

so hate the show or hate the character, but don't hate the man who played the character perfectly. If every character opined constantly how great Sheriff Bullock was, and how happy he was all the time, and THEN Olyphant sulked around throwing punches and grimacing constantly, then yeah, he fricked up.

But no, everyone in the town agreed that Bullock was a miserable sonuvabitch. so I don't see how playing the character as written is horrible.

I don't believe he did as I found nothing interesting or compeling about his portrayal. there have been numerous actors that successfully played in angry roles and made the character interesting and entertaining. The first role that popped into my head was Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. I found none of this in his portrayal of Bullock.

I haven't read the scripts, stage directions, or conversations between the actors, directors and writers on the X-Men films or Deadwood, but I have to assume that the character description and history of Wolverine and Bullock was a little more extensive than "angry guy".

I am sure it was and that was also the first example that popped into my head. The director provides direction but the actor brings a role to life through gestures, inflections in tone, and character. I saw none of this from Olyphant in that role and it is hard for me to imagine that it couldn't be done. This is only my opinion and we all know what taht is worth.

ha, yeah, I don't know why I'm white knighting for Timothy Olyphant so hard. Guy drowns in accolades, money and pussy, he doesn't need me. in fact, frick that guy!

The main reason my family decided to watch Justified was because we liked Olyphant so much in Deadwood. I just like him better in Deadwood by default because it was by far the superior show.

No, he's not that bad. The character is supposed to be an angry, stoic guy who shows very little emotion, and that's exactly how Olyphant plays him.

Hawkes is pretty good in it, but he doesn't exactly steal the show. Ian McShane and Powers Boothe both own their scenes and deliver the best performances
