Titanic question: are we supposed to infer that rose’s mom lived rest of life destitute?

Rose was supposedly their ticket back to wealth after the dad left them heavily in debt

Rose never saw her mom again and Cal had no use for her

Earlier in the film, she implied she would be a seamstress if rose doesn’t marry into wealth.

I know she was portrayed as very elite and snobbish in the film, but it would be kind of dismaying to become third class after living your entire life in wealth, old money wealth.

Or would she have used her rich network of socialites to maintain high class status ?

Ruth lives. There's a deleted scene in which the lifeboat survivors drift along and are then rescued by a ship called the Carpathia. Rose, Cal, Ruth and others are there. Rose has a cloak on and hides from them in steerage, almost being seen by Cal. Ruth seems to think Rose is dead, as a lot of other passengers are shown grieving, but we only see her for a few seconds, looking for Rose.

Old Rose goes on to say that Cal married, lost everything in the stock market crash of 1929 and "put a pistol in his mouth." Sorry, Cal.

Interesting fact about the Carpathia: it was torpedoed by the Germans during WWI.

Rose was a truly despicable person.

Let her mother think she drowned in that tragedy and let her suffer that feigned loss for the rest of her life. And why? Because she was mad that her mother wanted her to marry a rich man. Boo fricking hoo.

There was a lot of spite and callousness in Rose.

And don’t get me started on the fricking Louis diamond.

Think of all the good that could have done. Could have made her family’s life easier. Don’t want to help your family? Fine, give it to charity. Disease research. Anything but sticking it up your arse for 80 years then dropping it in the ocean you old dirty count.

She doesn’t have a soul. None of this should be shocking.

Exactly. What would have happened to it if she hadn't been asked to go out on the research ship? Her heirs find it when they are cleaning out the house after she dies? Do they sell it? Doubtful they know the story behind it. Sell it to someone who does who gives them "a fair price" and then turns around and sells it for millions.

That group would have dropped her immediately after she became destitute.

I think it’s safe to say Ruth’s blow job skills would have drastically improved.

Is it safe to assume that ole Shirley Q. has been cancelled? A LONG time ago?

They used to play "her" on the radio every morning.

Yeah, this movie, like so many other things, seemed intent on brainwashing women into being stupid selfish whores. Ruth was a shitty person, but in 1912, Rose could still have changed her identity and started over while somehow letting her mother know she was still alive. Jack's death is just a symbol of the selfishness. He's just a secret little chapter in her life. If he lived, they'd go on to have an ordinary life, which might be boring. She needs to go fly planes or whatever, so frick you, Jack. But of course, she does still secretly pine away for him while married to another man.

I don't think she could have sold the diamond. It wasn't hers, and Cal lived for several years after the Titanic sank. If she'd attempted to sell it, she'd have been arrested, and Cal and her mother would know she was alive. I can at least agree with that part.

So of course, in typical selfish fashion, she pointlessly possesses it her whole life and then throws it away so no one can have it, because she's about to die.

And women lined up to see this movie over and over again. It was kind of creepy when it broke the box office record. It really felt like a wildly successful manipulation campaign.

Vigo, the Sorrow of Moldavia, was probably pretty upset about that.

On second thought, he was the Scourge of Carpathia. Maybe he pressed the button.

The massive elephant in the room that people seem to miss is that Rose lived a long full life, married, had kids and grandkids. But she never spoke about Jack and when she dies, she chooses to go be with Jack (a person she knew for 2-3 days) instead of the man she married and had a family with.

She's all kinds of fricked in the head
