December 19, 1997.
The most expensive production in Hollywood history up to that point in time, Titanic earned a respectable $28.6 million at the box office in its opening weekend. From that point on, however, the film turned into a global phenomenon and managed to remain #1 at the domestic box office for 16 consecutive weeks. It made its two leads, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, into megastars and cemented director James Cameron's place amongst the truly elite filmmakers of his era.
Titanic grossed over two billion dollars during its original theatrical run and remains among the Top Five highest grossing films of all-time when adjusted for inflation. It would also be nominated for a record-tying 14 Academy Awards, ultimately winning 11 of them - including the grand prize for Best Picture.

I have a theory that part of the reason Titanic had such financial success was word leaked out that a PG13 movie had tits and tons of elementary and junior high aged boys across the country made it a point to tag along with their moms, aunts, and older sisters and girl cousins to see it.

Watched it the other night. Winslet was fantastic. Billy Zane nailed his rich prick character.
I was 15 when this movie came out. All the girls my age were legitimately in love with Leo.
Went down a rabbit hole after I watched it again… Cameron really did his homework on the historical characters. He apparently was really hard to work for. Winslet especially said it would take a lot of money to work for him again.

Cameron is definitely a very demanding boss to work for. Very few of the cast and crew of The Abyss will ever talk about the film due to how demanding Cameron was on set. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio had to attend therapy sessions to recover from shooting her drowning and resuscitation scenes.

I remember being like 11 an all excited to watch it when parents went out of town. My mom recorded over the nudity with EWTN or some chit.

I remember when the VHS came out, there was some company that offered for you to send them your copy, and they would edit the tits out
There is a special place in hell for the guy who sat down and edited all those tits out of all those copies that ended up getting sent to him

Other than the line of, "Jack, this is where we first met" as the ship is going down...
I remember busting out laughing in the theatre.

True… but… the “I’d rather be his whore than your wife” line to Cal was a solid rebound.

The sinking of the Titanic was horrible.
Titanic winning the Oscar for Best Picture over Good Will Hunting was tragic.

I just remember that Celene Dione song being played on the radio over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.
And over again.
And over again.

I've never seen it. Never peeked my interest when I wad 24. I already knew how it was going to end. Wasn't interested in a love story at the time. Still have no desire to see it but I can appreciate that some people love it. To each their own.

1997 was a solid year for the Oscars.
You had L.A. Confidential, Good Will Hunting, Titanic, As Good as It Gets, and The Full Monty all nominated for Best Picture. L.A. Confidential is one of the GOAT film noir movies, Good Will Hunting is a fantastic drama, Titanic is a legendary historical epic, and the latter two films are among the great comedies to come out of the 1990s.

Movie was the perfect storm of attractive cast members, huge visual effects and great score. I went with my Brother and his wife shortly after the release of the film. Even though it was a "romantic" movie, I still enjoyed the shite out of it.

Or, maybe it was just a really well made movie?
