December 19, 1997: the world is introduced to Jack and Rose and their exploits on the ill-fated RMS Titanic.
At that point in time it was the most expensive film ever produced, with production costs skyrocketing to $200 million. A lengthy post-production caused the film to be delayed from its summer release date to the Christmas season. Because of the delays and production costs, many insiders believed the film would be a flop.
When it finally released on December 19, it finished #1 at the box office, edging out Tomorrow Never Dies by just three million dollars (28 million vs. 25 million). Then the crazy shite began to happen. In its second weekend it finished #1 again, making over $35 million in its second weekend - an increase of 23.8%. Titanic would spend 15 straight weeks at #1, never dropping below $20 million in a given weekend until its 11th week in release. It would finally lose its crown during the weekend of April 3-5 to Lost in Space before regaining it briefly on Easter weekend two weeks later.
By the time its run was over it had grossed over $600 million at the domestic box office, a feat that wouldn't be repeated again until The Avengers was released in theaters in 2012. Adjusted for inflation, Titanic remains the fifth highest grossing film of all-time behind such classics as E.T., The Sound of Music, Star Wars, and Gone with the Wind.

That movie was such a huge deal when it came out. I was in school and waiting tables at the time. It was all the customers and wait staff were talking about. I thought it was good, but nowhere near the level of LA Confidential, which I just seen at the theater.

A core memory for me is my sister coming home after watching it the first weekend and telling me and my mom about it and how good it was then telling us Jack dies at the end. My mom didn't see it in theatres because of that. She didn't get mad but I know deep down my mom had to have been like "wtf spoilers maybe."

People couldn't stop going back to the theater....
There's been 1977 Star Wars, 1982 E.T. and 1997 Titanic in the modern era.....where people couldn't get enough of it.

I would include Home Alone.

Saw it three times with the broad I was seeing at the time.
Once was enough for me but it got her wet as hell.

My neighbors at the time saw it at least 10 times in theaters. Once was enough for my wife thank God.

People these days who weren’t around back then won’t ever realize how big of a deal this movie was.
I finally watched it about 10-15 years ago. It wasn’t a very good movie, but it was watchable. And the SFX of the ship crashing and sinking were pretty great. It wasn’t my cup of tea but I could see why people (women) liked it.

The most overrated movie in history. Lonely women lined up to see this again and again, all season long.
I said then and now, it's just sadness porn. Women especially love it because Jack dies while he's still 'perfect.' There is no happily ever after. The guy Rose ends up with is just a guy to pay for stuff and father (most of) her children. That's the mundanity of adulthood. Jack dies before he can turn into that.

Probably true if you understand women....
People say women are romantic....not if you understand what that word means by definition and how you see life.
Women are pragmatic, men are romantic to a fault and that's why Jack dies and women have no problem with it..

I prefer to call it The Chick Flick That Stole All of L.A. Confidential's Oscars. I don't care if that is too long of a title to fit on a marquee.

When it came out, I was between marriages and sowing my oats. Titanic was a great date movie, I took four different dates to it and it delivered every time.
