Josh Hartnett made the movie worth watching. His performance was Nic Cage levels of crazy fun.

But the level of absolute incompetence from everyone else in the movie and the amount of complete bullshite this movie has as a plot is just completely distracting.

The Philadelphia police department aren’t even mall cop levels of competent. I mean, I realize some of that is intentional but at a certain point, it just feels like the script is just writing good luck for the main character.

Spoilers:

The absolute fricking stupidity of the ending was beyond infuriating.

They let Hartnett frick around with a bike. And then the profiler allows his daughter to run up and hug him. WTF. What if he just took her hostage? Killed her.

Or when he just causally walks through a police briefing

Ughhhhh

Yeah once the jig is up at the event and he goes with the singer, it completely loses all sense of itself and just does whatever it needs to to keep the plot alive

I never rooted for a killer to kill more than the scenes with shamalyans daughter

I liked it until the point where they left the concert, seemed to fall apart after that.

What was supposed to be the big twist like we see in M. Night Shamalyan movies?

Hartnett was really good.

Except she turned him in through the
most convoluted way possible.

Yeah it wasn’t much of a twist, and her turning him in doesn’t really change anything

Felt like it could’ve worked better to have the concert take the full movie but intersect it with scenes of him being the butcher / hiding it from his family

We get no real background in the concert and then it just feels like random exposition unfolding in the back half to give it some emotional weight, when I think that could’ve worked better if we were seeing flashes of him being a great dad and him being a monster (or planning different victims atleast)

Second half of the movie is just M Knight trying to get his daughter’s career going. Basically turns into her movie halfway through

What was the pay off of the sub plot of the daughter's friend, her mom and their beef?

I think the payoff are “wouldn’t it be funny to allude but not carry out the fantasy of a serial killer offing your daughter’s friend’s bratty parents?”

Shyamalan sucks when he can't plagiarize someone else's stories.

Another thing - the production value was just...sub-standard. I see the budget was only $30M. The concert wasn't even vaguely believable. It was WAY too quite, even for just ambient noise - almost like the anti-Nolan.

It was also preposterous that the dad EVER got the daughter to leave her seats mid-concert.

I pretty much agree with that.

I finished it last night. It definitely wasn’t very good but weirdly, I enjoyed it.

I really liked it until they left the concert. I felt like it sort of fell apart a good bit at that point, and entered into a bastion of ridiculousness. Like OP says, the incompetence level was off the charts stupid. I also agree that production value felt cheap.

I thought Hartnett and the daughter did a good job, and pretty much every single other person in the movie was horrible.

Hayley Mills caught me off guard. I would’ve guessed she’s been dead for years.

I thought this movie was trash.

A better twist would have been if the wife was a serial killer too and their whole elaborate plan was to get Lady Raven back to their house to kill her.

That is literally what I thought was gonna happen. I went into it trying my best to not expect a twist, but that’s MNS’s fault, not mine.

But I definitely thought she would be the killer and he was more just doing her dirty work for her sometimes.

Yeah, both Mrs. Vox and myself figured either the family was cool with his second life as The Butcher, or the wife was the real killer.

It’s just a bunch of unbelievable things followed by even more. My favorite is how the wife poisons the cake on the off chance that not only does he show back up but she can also convince him to eat it and that it will take effect before he can kill her.
